I greatly enjoyed this well-written segment in which DiNozzo's dad (Robert Wagner) appears as the red herring suspect in a murder investigation. The piling on of evidence against him, plus the befuddled expressions of a hung-over Wagner wondering if he actually committed the crime but couldn't remember, made for a diverting show.

What added to the intrigue is the real-life coincidence of the veteran actor being under suspicion as the case of the mysterious death of his wife Natalie Wood 30 years ago has just been reopened by the cops. Here, too, he seems a red herring as the boat captain recollects evidence supposedly pointing to him as a culprit. I wonder how Wagner reacted to last night's airing of NCIS given the timing.

Fortunately, his acting and that of the series' regulars defuses this issue, especially as Mark Harmon's character Gibbs showed impressive sympathy for both DiNozzo père et fils. By episode's end, everything was back in order and in fact one felt a new bonding was in progress for the DiNozzo family.

Actual resolution of the mystery was well-handled, and I couldn't guess the killer's identity even though there were ample clues provided. All told, an unexpectedly timely and rewarding segment.

Spoilers here. Good show, but throughout the episode I was annoyed at the obvious discrepancy / inequality between how McGee's sister Sarah was treated in TWISTED SISTER (season 4, 2006) and how DiNozzo Senior is treated in this episode. In each episode, a family member is a prime suspect. Sarah had blood on her hands matching the victim and a video showed her at the scene of his death. She claimed to have blacked out.

In this episode, evidence piled up on DiNozzo Sr., and he blacked out, too, supposedly from drinking too much.

McGee harbored his sister Sarah, did not turn her over to NCIS asap, and even allowed her to run. He only let NCIS get involved when he had no option. Even then, she was never handcuffed by anyone at NCIS and never kept in overnight detention.

But McGee immediately handcuffed DiNozzo Sr, and NCIS expected him to stay overnight at a prison/ detention center.

After McGee's sister finally met with Gibbs, McGee played a role in solving the case. Not so for Tony. He wasn't allowed to help at all. This is correct and proper procedure, but the imbalance between episodes repeatedly struck me.

Another bothersome episode: In this same 9th season, in THE PENELOPE PAPERS, McGee's grandmother clearly kept secrets from NCIS. McGee shouldn't have been allowed to interview or interrogate her, given their family relationship. But he did so, with Gibb's approval. Several times.
