Cassie's name is the short version of Cassandra. In the Greek mythology, Cassandra, King Priam's daughter, was cursed with the ability of prophecy. She foresaw the final defeat of Troy and her own death but no one believed her.

The book Cassie Newton is reading, "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., deals with an alien race who can view the future as they travel through their lives in a non-linear time, but have no free will; much like Cassie knows what will happen but cannot change her fate.

This episode is said to feature the first known use of "Google" as a verb when Willow asks, "Have you googled her yet?" and Xander responds "She's 17!"

Willow visits Tara's grave for the first time, and she leaves a small handful of stones on top of the gravestone. There is a Jewish tradition (Willow is Jewish) that one leaves a small stone or two on the gravestone during every visit to a loved one's grave. This tradition is also visible at the end of another Joss Whedon project, Serenity (2005), in which such stones are visible on the graves at the end of the film.

Willow mentions posting fan fiction of Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989) online. Doogie Howser was played by Neil Patrick Harris, who would go on to star in Kaip as susipažinau su jusu mama (2005) with Alyson Hannigan.

Before Cassie Newton dies, she cryptically informs Spike, "Someday, she'll tell you." This was meant to foreshadow Buffy telling Spike that she loves him in the series finale Vampyru zudike: Chosen (2003).

Cassie Newton's death (as well as Joyce Summers in episode 5.16, "The Body") are the only ones in the show's huge body-count that were due to natural causes.

First appearance of Amanda, who is later revealed to be a potential slayer.

Tara was born on October 16, 1980 and died on May 7, 2002.

Tara's gravestone states she died on May 7, 2002. This is the same date that the episode "Seeing Red" (S6E19) was first aired and is the episode in which Tara was shot and killed by Warren Mears.

Azura Skye's (Cassie) character in American Horror Story as Fiona, the cult follower who breaks into the Harmon home, also has foreshadowings of her imminent death.
