Xander is not satisfied living in the basement of his parent's house and is looking for an apartment of his own to live with Anya. Meanwhile, a demon called Toth chases Buffy at the Magic Box, and his smell guides Giles to the city dump. When Buffy and the Scoobies see Toth in the garbage landfill, he uses a rod device called Ferrula-Gemina blasting a ray against Buffy but hitting Xander instead. Toth vanishes and the group leaves the place with a confident Xander. Later the insecure Xander awakes in a pile of trash, follows his double and meets Willow to tell about his clone. Giles finds that the ray discloses one person into half, distilling personality traits into two separate bodies. Further, if one part is destroyed, the other will die. While trying to find a mean to unite Xander, they have to face the evil Toth.

Xander's double is played by Nicholas Brendon's identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan.
At one point, Xander quips to Willow, "You try having an evil twin and see how you handle it." After he leaves, Willow states she handled it just fine. She is referring to Vampire Willow in Dopplegangland.
To prove to Willow that he's the real Xander, weak Xander does the Snoopy Dance, which Willow noted she likes seeing him do when she goes to his house to watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas" ("Passion").
In this episode, there is a throwaway line by Joyce saying she has a headache. This is the first sign of a much larger problem, one that leads to her death.
Moving out of his basement at the end, Xander calls up more or less fond memories: "That's where Spike slept" (in "Hush"); "That's where Anya and I drowned the Sepavro demon"(in "Something Blue"); "That's where I got my heart ripped out" (in Xander's dream in "Restless")
