But Seth Dharamdas does have a number of skeletons in his closet, and a parallel life as a gangster. The only person Dharamdas hates and fears is none other than his very own son, Ranbir, who has sworn that he will never compromise with his father's dark career, and threatens to expose him. Dharamdas has never conceded surrender or defeat at the hands of any mortal, and will never even consider to do so - even if this means the death of Ranbir. Danny Denzongpa was offered the role of Gabbar Singh in 1974. Due his dates being blocked for the Dharmatma schedule in Afghanistan, he had to pass on the offer.

Dharmatma was the first Indian film shot in Afghanistan.

Feroz Khan always had liked poetry. Once before Dharmatma, Indivar had recite a poetry to Feroz Khan, which started as tere chehra mein woh jadoo hai....Feroz Khan thought this poetry can be developed into an beautiful song so they worked on it and got the song. That is how the song was created. Later it was used for Dharmatma. .

Feroz Khan first wanted Zeenat Aman for Rekha's role. When he approached her she declined saying she did not want any supporting roles . This angered Feroz. One night when Feroz was high on drinks, he phoned Zeenat and gave her a verbal thrashing A few years later when he wanted her for Qurbani, he had to get a mutual friend to speak to her and convince her to do the film .

Sanjay Khan arrived at the premiere but kept to himself. He was seen dancing with Simple Kapadia later on in the night. Helen arrived at the premiere and was given a big kiss by Feroz Khan on stage. Vinod Khanna arrived with his wife Geetanjali at the premiere. Geetanjali did a solo dance with Feroz Khan on stage much to the amusement to everyone in attendance.

During the scripting of the film, Feroz Khan was very close to signing Superstar Rajesh Khanna for the role Feroz eventually played.

Rapper Jaylib sampled Dharmatma's Title music ( Sad Version) for his song Champion Sound.

Gary Glitter's song Rock N Roll Part 2 ( The Hey Song), is played in the film. The song appears when Ranjeet and Sudhir are high in the nightclub staring at dancer performing.

Premnath's character was based on the character of "Matka King" Ratan Khatri. It is said that Feroz Khan sat down with Ratan Khatri in order to learn all his details. Ratan would later go on and produce the film Rangila Ratan starring Rishi Kapoor and Praveen Babi .

The film had a "Adults Only" rating when it released in theatre' s in 1975.

Feroz Khan had said that only in his film, Dharmatma, Hema Malini looked more beatiful then in other film.

Inspired from The Godfather 1972 which translates to Dharmatma in hindi.

After Dharmatma, Feroz Khan wanted to buy the remake rights of a Itallian film he saw. He had plans to cast Hema Malini. The film was eventually shelved.

The film was sold for 12 Lakhs per territory.and fetched 75 to 80 Lakhs in return.

The Title Music of Dharmatma was sampled from Simon and Garfunkel song "El Condar Pasa". Years later Anu Malik got inspired by the same song and did the song Tare Hain Baraati from Virasat.

During the initial shooting of the film, Rekha felt that Feroz Khan was concentrating more on Hema Malini. She also felt left out of the publicity. Feroz stated that Rekha must have felt that way due to her messed up family and personal life.

After kissing Mumtaz on the nose in Apradh, Feroz wanted to go a step further in Dharmatma. Feroz Khan wanted to kiss Hema Malini on the lips. But Hema Malini's mother refused and did not allow this to happen.

Raj Kapoor had recorded the song "Main Shayar To Nahin" at a studio in Lower Parel, right after which he threw a party to celebrate the start of his new movie. Among the invitees were Shammi Kapoor and Feroz Khan, who had just returned from shooting International Crook in Canada. Shammi Kapoor had put on allot of weight and grew his trademark beard. Feroz Khan was about to start filming Dharmatma. Feroz Khan bluntly told Shammi Kapoor that he looked like he could play his father in Dharmatma. The remark led to a heated exchange of abuses followed by full blown fisticuffs. Soon enough, Randhir was pulling Shammi Kapoor away while Sanjay Khan was doing the same to Feroz. It took a while to separate them. They were put in their respective cars. However , it turned out they both drove to Haji Ali where they proceeded to drink more and cry on each others shoulders.

After signing Prem Nath for the film, Feroz saw the film Be Imaan, He hated Prem Nath's performance in the film and thought it was too loud and over the top. He almost started to regret his decision to sign him for the film .He asked Prem Nath not to scream and not to over act in his film . If one notices, Prem Nath's performance was very restrained and quite in Dharmatma.

Feroz Khan was one of the first few Indians from India to see The Godfather when he visited America in 1972. Feroz Khan took advantage of the fact the film was only released in a film festival in India.

Many people associated with the film wanted Hema Malini's character to not die. Many even suggested killing Rekha's character instead . The film's distributors kept telling Feroz to keep Hema Malini alive. Hema Malini was the only one who told Feroz to keep the script and character as he wrote it. Feroz wanted a major shock value impact when Hema suddenly died in the film. His gamble paid off when the film became a blockbuster.

The song "Tere Chehre Mein Woh" was shot at the famous Band e Amir National park in Bamyan Province, Afganistan.

Imtiaz Khan had made some very rude remarks about Rekha in the print. This caused her then boyfriend Kiran Kumar to bash him up. Feroz was worried about having Imtiaz and Rekha in the same film. Imtiaz promised Feroz that nothing would happen and all was in the past.

When Feroz Khan visited Afghanistan to select locations, King Zahir Shah was the ruler. Feroz was a personal guest of Zahir who gave him permission to shoot in Afghanistan. By the time Feroz returned back with his unit to shoot, a coup had happened. But all the authorities and people gave Feroz and his unit love and respect as Afghani's loved Hindi movies.

Sanjeev Kumar arrived at the film's premiere completely drunk and shook hands with all the fans waiting. Where as Rekha did not show up at all. Hema Malini also was not at the premiere but her mother Jaya came by herself.

Amitabh Bachchan arrived at the premiere with Manoj Kumar. Randhir Kapoor and Babita were seen dancing info the night. Simple Kapadia arrived with her parents but quickly joined the company of Danny Denzongpa. Prem Nath came with his son . Kamini Kaushal and Nadira were also at the grand premiere. VIP tickets were sent to Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, but the sent their drivers instead.

Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer arrived at the films premiere along with Sadhana and husband R.K. Nayar.

Recently a video of Feroz Khan Hema Malini and Danny arriving at the Afghanistan airport surfaced online. The clip was posted on the Kabul (Farid Dastan) page on facebook. The video also includes footage of a high profile party all three attended hosted by the biggest leaders of Afghanistan.

Many believed that actress Seema Kapoor stole the show with her night club dance . She was a enigma that Feroz directed very sensuously. Seema Kapoor going back to the time when she thrived and captured the hearts of men in the '70s. This was the era when every magazine used her pictures, especially Debonair, the adult magazine edited by famous journalist Vinod Mehta. She was hugely popular and continued to be in demand through the mid-70s before, suddenly falling off the radar. As is common in showbiz, she was quickly replaced by somebody else. However, veteran photographer NK Sareen didn't forget her.It was he who shot the maximum number of photos and featured her on the covers of numerous magazines, both English and regional. "I was introduced to Seema Kapoor by the editor of a film magazine. By then, she had already made a name for herself as a glamour model. She was very fair but when I saw her for the first time, she looked rather ordinary," says Sareen. However, Sareen thought that he would still give it a shot because he had promised his editor friend that he would shoot her. The first meeting, as Sareen says, was a warm one. "She received me with a lot of enthusiasm. She then asked me to wait for a few minutes. She came out of her home, went up to her car, opened the left door of her Fiat for me and occupied the driver's seat herself. She then removed her shoes and started driving barefeet. As she drove, she asked what kind of pictures I wanted to shoot. But before I could utter a word, she told me she would like to pose for only glamorous images because those were the ones that were in demand," Sareen adds. Then, says Sareen, came the trick question. "She gave me a mischievous smile, named another editor and said, 'He says I have a million dollar body, what do you think?' I was not expecting such a direct and brazen question and neither did I know how to answer her," Sareen recalls. They went to Madh Island and shot some sizzling pictures. And predictably, nobody at Debonair could say no to the shoot including Vinod Mehta. "She made two Debonair covers and was later featured in an extensive article shot especially for the magazine. She made it to several magazine covers one after the other. An English weekly from Delhi was launched with her picture on the cover and the second issue carried her on the cover again. Later, my pictures of Seema were used by several publications in Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Bengali and other regional languages," Sareen adds. Her pictures were sought-after and she was the ultimate pin-up girl, fuelling the fantasies of many men. She has a brother named Suresh Kapoor who is married to Kanta Kapoor. Sister named Sudha Kapoor who is married to Vinod Kapoor ( daughter Dimple married to Denis Navratil, another daughter named Shweta married to Sandeep Banga, another daughter named Ginni married to Akhil Gambhir).Brother named Ashok Kapoor (Son named Kapil Kapoor who is married to Jyoti and son Rishi Kapoor who is married to Anjali).. She is married to Married to Subodh K.Chibber.

An excellent adaptation of the 1972 Hollywood movie 'Godfather' to Bollywood standards, including its title in Hindi. It has been perfectly Indianised with its melodrama. It has excellent music by Kalyanji Anandji with melodious songs. Feroz Khan has acted beyond expectations equally supported by both the heroines Hema Malini & Rekha. Has mega locations of Afghanistan, reminding one of the western cowboy movies. The movie keeps one engrossed right from the beginning till the end, there isn't any dull moment. This movie can easily figure in one's must-see list. Each and every character has been appropriately casted beginning with Premnath as 'Dharmatma'. Worth watching any day.

RGV's Sarkar begins with the director admitting to being deeply influenced by The Godfather like countless directors all over the world. Feroz Khan's Dharmatma marks the beginning of this obsession with Indian film-makers. Given the exalted status of The Godfather with nearly every cinema buff and the fact that adaptations in the Indian milieu have resulted in films like Nayakan and Parinda, I thought Dharmatma was worth a watch. Having watched it, I've to say that despite the patchy feel of the film, there are items of interest here and noteworthy too.

Foremost among them is the portion of the film that plays out in Afghanistan (a first for Indian cinema). Hema Malini (as an Afghan clanswoman named Reshma !), Danny Denzongpa and Feroz Khan spice up this sequence that is remarkably well shot by any standards (Buzkashi) and lingers long after the viewing. Premnath in the title role is the other interesting aspect of the film. I'd seen him in Bobby but little else. His portrayal here is just as interesting in its angst and justification for the means he adopts as is the employment of matka (an Indian form of gambling). That it isn't expanded upon is more to do with the way the script handles the character.

Apart from these, the viewing also made me think about the meaning of the word adaptation in the cinematic idiom. When one is besotted with an original, how does one strike a balance between faithful recreation and assuming creative license ? Even more valid is the question - how does one identify the aspects of the original that may not be acceptable to the target audience of the adaptation ? For Feroz Khan in this film shares very little with Michael Corleone and undergoes a transformation so minimal in that his fundamentals are hardly shaken by the turn of events. In an act of complete dilution, he is also spared the moral dilemma of having to plan the demise of his brother-in-law too.

With having enjoyed watching a Curry Western starring producer/lead actor/director Feroz Khan a while ago,I was delighted to spot a 1975 gangster film from Khan that I could watch for a poll taking place on IMDbs Classic Film board, which led to me getting ready to meet the "god man"

The plot:

Despite having had the opportunity to send the city down the drain, local gangster Dharmatma has done everything he can to stick to his principles, which along with stopping the trafficking of hard drugs into the city, also involves using the money he raises from his illegal gambling activates to be put towards the creation of free schools.Whilst his dads principles have won a lot of fans, Ranbir has always been disguised by the way his dad goes about his business.

Sick of Dharmatma's grip on the city,a rival gangster called Jeevan feels that its time the old timer got pushed aside,so that the city can be saturated with hard drugs.Finding it impossible to find a weak spot in Dharmatma's political connections in the city,Jeevan finally sees his chance when Ranbir makes a surprise return, which leads to Jeevan setting his sights on bringing the family down.

View on the film:

Whilst Feroz Khan never quite gets the threads in Kaushal Bharati's screenplay to fully gel together,he makes sure that his attempts are never a dull experience, thanks to Khan sweeping across the movie with a delightfully bonkers directing style, which goes from covering a bustling night club (back with a Gary Glitter song!) in screeching reds,to sheep busting each other's heads! For the first ever Bollywood movie to be shot in Afghanistan,Khan and cinematographer Kamal Bose use superb wide shots to create a rugged atmosphere,by displaying the dry to the bone locations that the gangsters attempted takeover takes place in.

Giving the character a warm nature lacking in Bharati's screenplay, Prem Nath gives an excellent performance as "Darmatma",with Nath knocking Dharmatma's hard exterior to reveal a man with strong (flawed) principles, whose goals are always related to what is best for his family/the city.Joining Nath, Anokhelal gives a wickedly deranged performance as Anokhelal, whilst Feroz Khan does very well at showing a delicate nervousness ,as he prepares to reunite with his Dharmatma.

Feroz Khan may not be known much as an actor but as a director he did give us some good films, Apradh(1972) being his directorial debut, Dharmatma(1975) is a remake of Godfather(1972) with many changes. It starts with Premnath as Dharmatma who is a matka king based on matka (form of Indian gambling) king Ratan Khatri. It is said that Khan sat down with Khatri to learn more about him and understand the nuances of matka Dharmatma like most of FK films had lot of style, this was the first film shot in Afghanistan. Feroz Khan plays the son who hates his father's illegal business activities(unlike Sarkar which released in 2005 there is only one son). The first half focuses on his romance with Hema Malini set in Afghanistan, some forced sequences and a Bukashi game. It has Danny who lost his role for SHOLAY due to his short role in this. The film is well handled by FK Music by Kalyanji Anandji is fab, Tere Chehre Mein sung by Kishore is awesome, Kya khoob Lagti ho is also fab Like in most Fk films music has always been an highlight

Feroz Khan is good with his inimitable style and does a decent job Hema Malini looks her best ever and is decent in a small role Rekha looks simple and is okay Iftekar is good in a small role, Premnath in the main role is good Danny is good in his small role, Ranjeet and Sudhir play Pot smoking brothers, both wearing same outfits and are good, Jeevan as the villain is as usual, Satyen Kapoo with a weird voice is good too Imtiaz Khan is good as the villain, Farida Jalal is as always, fab
