The film follows Janardhan Jhakar in a series of flashbacks and flash forwards, how the small collage boy became an international rock sensation "Jordan". To chase his dreams of a rockstar, the wanna-be singer his counseled that music and feelings only come with pain. In the process of which, he meets Heer, a tough on the outside and popular college girl, the both become friends, and as time passes by his dreams of music fade away as they spend time together. When heer moves away, Janardhan is thrown out of his house because of family misunderstandings. As he bides his time at a local mosque, his passion for music comes back to life. He is soon signed by a record label, where he makes more enemies than friends, his tour takes him to Prague, where he is reunited with a married Heer. Things go awry when the two share an intimate moment, and Jordan his deported to India on trespassing charges filed by Heer's husband. Ranbir Kapoor had to take many efforts to transform himself into a rock star. He practiced guitar at A. R. Rahman's studio for many days, read Kurt Cobain's biography and familiarized himself with him.
The film was shot in reverse as the crew didn't want to break the continuity of Ranbir Kapoor's hairstyle. So the climax with long hair was shot first.
Director Imtiaz Ali, who loved Kareena Kapoor's performance in his Jab We Met wanted to cast her in Rockstar. However, the script in Rockstar required some romantic scenes between the romantic leads. As Ranbir and Kareena happened to be cousins, this would have been a problem. She was replaced by Nargis Fakhri.
During the Sadda Haq sequence several scenes show Tibetans and Jordan performing in front of them. Several posters have 'give us our rights' written on them. The song literally means the same. This is an indirect support of the Tibetan cause of freedom from China from Imtiaz Ali. He has also stated that his next movie would be directly based on the same. Though the posters directly showing the word 'Tibet', it was blurred in the theatrical version.
In the original script, Ranbir Kapoor's character 'Jordan' dies in the end. However, director Imtiaz Ali and Kapoor felt that this might not be the best possible ending, so the entire climax was re-shot.
The porn film 'Jungli Jawani' that Jordan and Nargis watch is actually edited from scenes of a B-grade film 'Jungle Love'. The lead actress of that film later unsuccessfully tried to sue Yash Raj Films and Imtiaz Ali for using those scenes as porn without her permission.
Major parts of the song "Saadda Haq" video was shot at the Norbulingka monastery in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala. People waving the Free Tibet flag in the backdrop was shown in the song video. This triggered a dispute between Central Board of Film Certification and Imtiaz Ali when the Board ordered Ali to blur the flag and free Tibet slogan before the film hit the theatre, but the director refused to do it.

In late 2010, he then announced Rockstar and his lead star Ranbir Kapoor.
Imtiaz Ali had started writing the script for Rockstar in 2007, and had originally had Hrithik Roshan in mind for the role of Jordan, however, before he contracted Hrithik Roshan into the movie, he sheveled the script as he was unsatisfied with his first draft. Ali then began writing the second draft of Rockstar, and narrated it to Ranbir Kapoor, originally having no intention in casting Kapoor. After completing the second draft, Ali filmed Love Aaj Kal in 2009, and in late 2010, Ali cast Ranbir Kapoor for the lead role of Jordan.
