Ernest Borgnine was offered a guest role because the staff liked his work on the films Marty (1955) and From Here to Eternity (1953). He wasn't too familiar with the show when he was asked to be a guest star. But his grandchildren were fans so he accepted the offer.

Bart's 'Junior Camper' badges include Archery, Debt Collecting, Embalming, TV Trivia and Patch Forgery

When Bart and Milhouse 'go crazy broadway style', the signs behind a laughing Apu read 'Models and Model Decals', 'Triple G rated', 'Sweet tooth', 'Bootleg Records' and 'All Nite Arcade'

The "Springfield! Springfield!" song is a takeoff on "New York, New York" from On the Town (1949).

Matt Groening thought the recording sessions with Ernest Borgnine were "so much fun". Hank Azaria commented that Borgnine "had no idea what the hell he was doing. He's a good actor, and he read his lines just fine, but he had no idea what the show was, no idea what we were doing."

The episode was recorded at the Village Recorder in West Los Angeles.

In the final scene, Ernest Borgnine plays a guitar and sings campfire songs with the children. Borgnine was a guitar player in real life, so he brought his own guitar with him to the recording studio. Borgnine apologized because he felt that he was not being able to sing very well, but Nancy Cartwright thought his voice "added to the authenticity of his character".

In her book My Life as a 10-Year-Old Boy, Nancy Cartwright comments that she was a fan of Ernest Borgnine's performance in Marty (1955). She writes that the film had "changed [her] forever", and that it made her "realize that actors have the power through their work to inspire and enlighten others." She recalls that when Borgnine arrived for the recording session, she "lost all coolness" and ran up to him and exclaimed "ohmygod, Marty!"

When Homer smells the scent of Krusty Burger when stranded on the boat with Flanders, Rod, Todd and Bart, he pulls out a map with the locations of Krusty Burger around North America. He points to the south east coast of the country that displays an offshore oil rig. This could indicate roughly the area in which Springfield is located. Judging from opinions on the proposed location of Springfield it could very well be Michigan even though it is quite far from the Southern East Coast.

Ms. Botz and Fat Tony appear on wanted posters in Chief Wiggum's office.

The large queue at the arcade is for a Terminator game.
