Was originally supposed to be a mid season replacement on NBC for the 2014-2015 season. Netflix picked it up with a two-season commitment after NBC dropped it.
Before he came to Hollywood, Jon Hamm (Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne) was a high school drama teacher at the John Burroughs School in Ladue, Missouri. One of his drama students was Ellie Kemper, who plays Kimmy.
The first seven episodes of the series were edited with the assumption they would be aired on NBC and adhered to a twenty-two-minute time limit and included transitions for commercials. After the show was acquired by Netflix, the episodes were re-edited to remove commercial transitions, and jokes that were previously omitted due to running time constraints were reinserted.
Tina Fey wrote the role of Jacqueline with Jane Krakowski in mind.
According to an interview with EW, this role was written specifically for Ellie Kemper.
A video clip of Jane Krakowski as a child can be seen in the opening credits.
Tituss Burgess' character Titus is an actor with a dream of Broadway. In reality, Burgess has starred on Broadway four times.
The theme restaurant where Titus works is based on Jekyll & Hyde, a similarly themed restaurant in Manhattan, New York. The scenes in the restaurant were actually filmed at Jekyll & Hyde located in the West Village
Tituss Burgess (Titus Andromedon) and James Monroe Iglehart (Coriolanus Burt) have starred on Broadway in musicals produced by Disney. Titus originated the role of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, and James won a Tony Award for his performance as the Genie in Aladdin.
Jacqueline Voorhees' dog in this show is the same dog Krakowki's character, Jenna Maroney, owned on Tina Fey's previous comedy 30 Rock (2006).
Multiple references are made to Jon Hamm's role as Don Draper on Mad Men (2007) including Kimmy saying he "claimed he wrote the 'buy the world a Coke' commercial" and calling him a "mad man".
The first name of Jacqueline's stepdaughter, Xanthippe, is a nod to show-runner Tina Fey's Greek heritage. "Xanthippe" is an ancient Greek name, belonging to several minor figures in Greek mythology, as well as to the historical wife of the philosopher Socrates. The character of Xanthippe on this show is depicted as an extremely difficult and contrary adolescent. The little that appears in Ancient Greek literature about the historical Xanthippe also implies that she was extremely young when she married Socrates, and that she had a difficult and argumentative personality. Antisthenes called Socrates' wife "the hardest to get along with of all the women there are-yes, or all that ever were, I suspect, or ever will be?", though Socrates also says that he specifically wanted a wife who had a challenging personality, which was the reason he chose Xanthippe. The name literally means "yellow horse" ("xanthos" meaning blonde/yellow and "hippos" meaning horse).
Just like on Tina Fey's previous show, 30 Rock (2006), Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond composed all of the show's music, and also serves as a producer and guest director.
Kimmy's full name is Kimberly Cougar Schmidt.
Because of Tituss Burgess' Broadway background, the show features many Broadway star cameos such as Jefferson Mayes, James Monroe Inglehart, Nic Rouleau, and John Cullum.
Tina Fey and Jerry Minor's characters of the bumbling prosecutors were based on prosecutors Marcia Clark and Chris Darden of the infamous O.J. Simpson murder trial. Aside from the physical resemblances; during the course of the trial and afterward, Clark and Darden were accused of incompetence and rumored to have been in a relationship.
The character of Titus has much in common with the actor who plays him (Tituss Burgess), with some distinct differences: they have nearly identical first names, although the character Titus changed his name from Ronald Wilkerson. Both are from the Deep South: Titus from Mississippi, Burgess from Georgia. Both moved to New York City to pursue careers on Broadway, but unlike his character, Tituss Burgess' aspirations have been very successful with roles in Broadway productions such as Jersey Boys, The Little Mermaid, and Guys and Dolls.
Titus Andromedon and his "acting nemesis", Coriolanus Burt, have stage names drawn from or inspired by lesser-known Shakespeare tragedies about Roman generals ("Coriolanus" and "Titus Andronicus").
In the January 2015 Television Critics Association winter press tour panel, Robert Carlock and Tina Fey said that their aim was to make the show with the tone of "TGS Hates Women", an episode of 30 Rock (2006), in which Liz exposes a female comedian who's actually on the run from her psycho ex-boyfriend.
On 30 Rock (2006) season six, episode one, "Dance Like Nobody's Watching" (also created by Tina Fey), a main plot point mentioned Reverend Gary predicting the end of the world. Reverend Gary features in this show, and the end of the world was his pretense for abducting and keeping Kimmy and the other Mole Women in the bunker.
Kimmy tells Gretchen that the Reverend claims to have invented the "give the world a Coke" commercial. This is a nod to the series finale of another Jon Hamm (who plays the Reverend) show, Mad Men (2007).
Contains the same color footage of the little girl in the blue outfit with the hula hoops in their opening credits montage as in the drama, The Americans (2013).
Tituss Burgess (Titus) has his own line of wines, including Pinot Noir. He sings "Peeno Noir", a fan favorite, in season one.
All except one, every episode of the show is titled in the "Kimmy (Does Something)!" format. The one anomaly occurs in S4E9 "Sliding Van Doors".
The first and second seasons begin with renditions of "Let It Snow".
Was chosen by The Guardian as the best television series of 2015 in the December 17, 2015 issue.
Ellie Kemper has stated that she would like Kyle Chandler to guest star on the show.
Ellie Kemper (Kimmy) and Sara Chase (Cyndee) appeared on The Office (2005).
Tituss Burgess was nominated for the 2018 Emmy Award in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his role as Titus Andromedon on this show, but lost to Henry Winkler from Barry (2018).
Lannister, the middle name of Jacqueline's stepdaughter (Xanthippe Lannister Voorhees) is the last name of one of the scheming, murderous ruling families in the "Game of Thrones" book and television series.
Kimmy's friend and classmate Dong Nguyen shares a name with the creator of the popular mobile game app, Flappy Bird.
The characters Kimmy and Titus often reference the show Seinfeld (1989). Carol Kane (Lillian) appeared on an episode of Seinfeld (1989).
On May 4, 2018, it was announced that season 4 would be the final season of the series. It was also hinted at that a movie might cap off the series.
Kimmy's mother says she had Kimmy when she was seventeen. Lisa Kudrow is exactly seventeen years older than Ellie Kemper. However, Kemper is five to eight years older than her character Kimmy.
