Travis Fimmel said this was a very difficult episode because of the weather conditions. It was very cold and sometimes raining on the set.
Most of the Northumbrian soldiers in this episode were played by extras who usually play vikings. Many of them felt strange taking part of the torture of their "leader".
This was the only episode not to have a new scene with Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), though he does appear in Ragnar's flashback.
In real life, Ragnar's last words were, "And my sons will avenge me".
Michael Hirst wanted to kill Ragnar at the end of season 1, but seeing the good interpretation of Travis Fimmel and the public response to the character he decided to continue Ragnar's story.
