An anxious Penny arrives at Hope Memorial. Penny confides to Liz that she's pushing Nick and Althea toward marriage with the hope that Nick will adopt her, and they can be a family. Liz strongly urges Penny to let the adults decide for themselves. Martha and Ed vow to prove to Nick that they can run the lab without his presence. Carolee's keen mind deduces the obvious when Steve pressures her to give him the scoop regarding Karen. Steve threatens Carolee to not spread gossip around the hospital about his interest in Karen. Anna hears Ed laugh for the first time since Vietnam, but after being overcome with pain, she gives him his marching orders.
