Krusty learns that he did not have a bar-mitzvah as a boy because he was considered too disruptive, so he plans to have one as an adult. Whilst he is studying for it Homer replaces his television show with a panel game, which is initially successful but then bombs. To restore ratings it is suggested that Krusty have a glitzy, televised, bar-mitzvah with guest star Mr. T. but, sensing his father's disapproval, Krusty opts for a more traditional one.

Krusty asks, "Chaim Potok! Who is he, some kind of Klingon?" In reality, Chaim Potok was a famous Jewish-American writer.

The statement in the title is part of the Hebrew coming of age rite for young men or the Bar Mitzvah where the candidate declares "Today I am a man".

When Krusty says the last thing he remembers is riding a bike, this is because it's deemed impossible to forget how to ride a bike.

Lisa breaks the fourth wall by consulting the 'Simpsons Guide Book' to look up the last time Santa's Little Helper sired puppies ('Two Dozen and One Greyhounds' from Season 6).

The neutering clinic is called "Nuts Landing." In addition to being an off-color reference to neutering, it's also a play on the popular television series 'Knotts Landing.'

Homer's show seems very similar to Bill Maher's 'Politically Incorrect.'

The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance - Dan Castellaneta.

It is revealed Krusty never had a bar mitzvah.

Today I Am a Clown is a great Simpsons episode with a well written plot and plenty of very funny moments. It's a fun mix as we get to see Krusty struggling to prepare for his Bar Mitzvah as his producers want to make a televised event out of it. Meanwhile, Homer takes over Krusty's time block, which was the highlight for me, as we see him going mad with power after becoming an overnight success.

However, neither plots delivered on their premise as much as they could have. Krusty could have been given larger complications to make it more exciting and we should have seen Homer's fame stretch beyond Springfield.

The guest stars in this episode are also a delight. Jackie Mason is always a pleasure to see as Rabbi Krustofski and Mr. T also makes a random, albeit extremely funny, appearance as himself as the Bar Mitzvah.

It is a combination of two plots that do not outweigh each other, one is not more significant than the other, and having them interconnected made it feel more full, rather than them having nothing to do with each other. Funny and clever, Today I Am a Clown is not a highlight of the fifteenth season, but it's still an enjoyable viewing.

Homer becomes a huge success while filling in for Krusty while he prepares for his Bar Mitzvah.
