Ash and friends reach the Dewford Gym at last, but the Gym Leader, Brawly, would rather surf than battle. Disgusted at this apparent lack of work ethic, Ash marches out into the waves and demands a Gym battle immediately! But when the battle begins, Ash is too headstrong to see the flaws in his strategy. He pushes Treecko to fight harder than any Pokémon should, and Treecko is quickly defeated by Brawly's Makuhita. Later, Ash sees Brawly surfing with his Pokémon, and discovers that for this Gym Leader, surfing is a form of training. Ash realizes that he was too hard-headed, and vows to train on Dewford Island for a rematch.
