Jess Harper is acting deputy in Laramie while Mort Cory is in Denver when he catches Tom Wade searching files in the sheriff's office. Wade is an ex-con, sent to prison for a crime he claims he didn't commit and he appears to be down and out on his luck. Jess and Tom know of each other by reputation but they have never met. Jess loans Tom some money which he uses to win big against the Bartell brothers who are known trouble makers. Julie Wade, Tom's wife, arrives in Laramie looking for Mort Cory, since they've been working trying to clear her husband. She tells Jess that Wade is out to kill Mort Cory, the man he believes framed him and sent him to prison. Meanwhile Milt Lane, Wade's former employer and the man who really framed him for robbery, has come to town to help his 'friend' Tom. Lane really wants Wade dead and he doesn't care who gets in the way, including Jess and Mort Cory.
