Lucas McCain welcomes his old army friend Don, who now goes by the name of Don Chimera del Laredo. He's awaiting the arrival of another mutual friend, Col. Charles Black. He regales Mark with tall tales but also has an ominous message. When Col. Black arrives the two of them will go to war with each having the intention of annihilating the other. It's not quite as dramatic as its made out to be as the two men will face each other across a chess board.

I quickly grow bored with series that show little variety and this episode was a nice change of pace although there is a little attempt at the beginning to mislead the viewer into thinking it will be a very serious affair.

Both of the main guest characters were played larger than life, but in a whimsical manner. A nice change of pace on an occasional basis.

Spoiler: I did like that this episode led Mark to do a little daydreaming at the end of the episode. Everyone should have a little time for daydreaming, even if those daydreams might be immature.

This series has always been a rather serious western with the overall theme about how a father loves his son. However, in this episode the writers take a more comical approach that just seems out-of-place for a 'Rifleman' episode. This is one of the few episodes that, after watching, it was so foolish that it would have been a better plot for a Saturday Morning cartoon show than for a western.

Two former friends and army buddies of Lucas comes for a visiting. The intentions of them meeting is to kill each other. One of the men rides up like swashbuckling knight that now calls himself Don Chimera del Laredo and the other is an Irish Colonel, Charles Black, in the US army. The two are set to battle till the death but it will be a game that is different than what the viewer will think.

This is not a poor episode but was not up to the high standards we usually see from the series. By the time the show comes to the end I was not really sure if I had seen 'The Rifleman' or 'Gilligan's Island'. And that is not a good review for any show.
