Stefan is delighted to have Damon back but Jeremy misses 'self-sacrificed' Bonnie even worse now and Elena refuses to have her memory restored by Alaric. Trip catches vampires, including Damon and Enzo, and has them transported to the border to be killed by the magic ban. During the last-minute rescue after Matt warns Stefan, Alaric falls on the fatal side and is barely brought back from death by his witch lover Dr. Jo but discovers this undid his vampire status.
