When Claire Novak gets a lead on her mother, Amelia, who has been missing for years, Castiel asks Sam and Dean to help her. Castiel feels guilty for what he did to the Novak family and wants to make amends by reuniting Claire with her mom. However, when they find out what took Amelia, they realize there is a chance Claire may not get her happy ending.

Dean and Claire bond over mini golf in this episode. In real life, Kathryn Newton (who plays Claire) is an avid golf player.
When Sam and Dean meet Castiel at the hospital, Dean says. "Three men and a lady. Let's do this." This is a reference to Three Men and a Little Lady (1990) -- the sequel to the 1987 comedy, Three Men and a Baby.
Russell Porter (Ronnie Cartwright) played Dean's suburbs buddy/neighbor Sid in Season 6, episode 1, "Exile on Main St". He was also credited as "Neighbor" in another CW hit, IZombie.
The title of this episode is taken from the Mickey Rourke thriller "Angel Heart" (1987). Which has Harry Angel Private Eye, whom double-crossed his deal with the Devil,sets out killing all who might know his true identity, while unbeknownst to Harry is that Louis Cypher, his patron is the Devil.
When Castiel gives Claire the Grumpy Cat stuffed animal he says, "I got it at the Hot Topical." This is a reference to the store Hot Topic, which is known for carrying merchandise from different fandoms, one of their main ones being Supernatural.
The FBI aliases Sam and Castiel are using are Agents Clapton and Page. This is a reference to guitarists Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, who both used to play in the Sixties blues rock group, as well both also played in John Mayalls Blues Breakers Band. The Yardbirds.
In this episode Amelia Novak is played by Leisha Hailey, a recast from the original Amelia, played by Wynn Everett in 4x20 "The Rapture".
