Red opens his fifth season (broadcast from New York City for the first two weeks while Red tours several children's hospitals) with some deft and amusing observations on the ritual of waving good-bye at a railroad station. Ed Sullivan makes his 'dramatic debut' in a sketch, titled 'The Super Chef', originally written for Jackie Gleason. Gleason's sponsor said that Gleason could not play his characters on outside shows so Ed Sullivan stepped in to portray Manhattan bus driver Ralph Kramden. Ed has the misfortune of having bungling Red, complete with bulky suitcases and a misplaced wallet. The Redettes also return.
