Series creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that this will be a crossover between Coven (season 3) and Murder House (season 1).

Jessica Lange was confirmed to be returning for season 8, making this season her first appearance since season 4.

The song (Tonight You Belong to Me) that plays when Michael Langdon arrives at Outpost 3, is the same song that plays during the Pilot and Finale episodes of season ones Murder House.

Wilhemina Venable can be seen wearing the same earrings that Dr. Arthur Arden gave as a present to Sister Mary Eunice in season 2.

Series creator, Ryan Murphy, confirmed earlier this year that season 8 will take place in the future.

Wilhelmina's hairdo is very reminiscent of Dracula's hair style from the 1992 movie Bram Stoker's Dracula. Also, Wilhelmina is the longer form of the name "Mina" which is a character name from the same movie.

This is the second season on the show for transgender actress, Erika Ervin. She plays the role of Miriam Mead's second-hand guard, her first being Amazon Eve on season 4.

The masks worn by the perimeter guards are based on the masks worn by the plague doctors in Venice during the Bubonic plague.

At one time, there was a strong association between the color purple and royalty, due to the difficulty of extracting and dyeing the fabric.

The title sequence contains scenes from the previous title sequences of "Murder House" and "Coven".

On January 13, 2018, a false ballistic missile alert was issued via the Emergency Alert System and Commercial Mobile Alert System over television, radio, and cellphones in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Title for season 8 was revealed to be American Horror Story: Apocalypse during Comic Con 2018.

The song that is played on repeat at dinner is a cover by The Carpenters of the song "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft". The track was originally by the band Klaatu which are a Canadian prog-rock duo that formed in 1973.

The first scene with Joan Collins is a reference to her iconic scene from the Steve McDaniel (1984) episode of Dynasty (1981). Her character, Alexis, was talking with Dominique Deveraux about the burned champagne which spent too much time in the fridge.

Emma Roberts confirmed she will be returning for season 8 on her Instagram.

The song "There Has To Be A Morning After" was a song that figured predominantly in the 70s version of "The Poseidon Adventure", about the survivors trapped inside a capsized ocean liner. It is played repeatedly in Episode 1.

Michael Langdon is the son of Vivian Harmon and Tate Langdon .

Sarah Paulson confirmed that she will be returning for season 8.

Michael langdons cooperative identification card contains the numbers "666" and what appears to the word "Lucifer" signed on the line belonging to the president of the cooperative.

Michael Langdon, take away the "g", you have Michael Landon who played an angel in the series" Highway to Heaven" (1984-1989) with the "g" it would seem he is emissary of God , a dark God , Lucifer.

Has a wtf factor, humor and creepy. I'll take it. Much better initial episode than previous seasons.

So far reviews have praised that AHS is back to its original form... Thank goodness too, after that "interesting" season last year.

However, already there is something lacking that the first four seasons had that this season doesn't.

Positives: The opening, so abrupt! It really added an element of reality to it. The end of the world happened just like that. The opening credits going back to its roots was a plus but it didn't have the same impact. Sarah Paulson is at her best when she uses subtlety. That fact that Venable is painted so evil yet she is so reserved is what makes her so appealing. Can't wait to see what they do with her character. Same with Kathy Bates! Joan Collins! Her quips stole the episode. I didn't care for Billy Eichner last season but he did so much with so little. Michael Langdon's entrance was awesome but also a tad bit off.

Negatives: Everything else is spoon fed, including the cast. Nothing we need to figure out or postulate about. Funny, considering the promos had fans doing that all summer long. I loved Adina Porter as Lee but all of her lines are so angelically rigid, almost artificial. Evan Peters is always a gem but I have no idea where is character is at. Leslie Grossman had me in the opening but quickly tested my patience. Same with the two teens. So did Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman! I thought he would be the episode stealer but he was actually the most annoying!

Still hopeful considering what is promised to come. If this season doesn't try too hard to force story lines and just focuses on making a good overall story, it could be a really kick ass season. Just be its own thing. Also...

JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN COVEN, THANKS BYE.

The first fifteen minutes of the show had me interested, but soon after, everything just felt like an amalgamation of fan service and a tool's version of artsy-goth which just came off as ham-handed and awkward in an unintentional way. The set and costume design alone simultaneously reeked of class fashion gluttony and Hot Topic Halloween sale with dialogue that swung wildly from perfectly delivered to awkward teenager's "cool lines" from their fanfic. I'm crossing my fingers for an improvement in the next few episodes, but I won't neglect my realistic expectations.

I really was excited for this season to see the Murder House/Coven mashup but haven't seen the connection quite yet.. So far, the dialog seems super forced, rushed, and corny as ever. It's only the first episode so far so I'll give it time but I am confused on what exactly is going on. Giving it a chance but the writing is lacking more than usual so far. The script just feels odd many times throughout with cheesy misplaced lines.

PROS: Cool costumes and aesthetics

CONS: Pacing, dialog, and general story direction

Great start with first 10 minutes but I'm just not entirely sold.....yet.

Given the exposition with the whole missile attack thing and the nuclear fallout I was quite excited and was looking forward to see what the episode has to offer.

Nothing - this is what happened after the first 15 minutes. It seems to me that AHS is not a show that cares about plot anymore but rather invests all its energy in trying to be inclusive and diverse - which is great when it actually makes sense.

The Coco character is just awful.

Great start with a good premise that morphed into a strange Victorian cult approach with a mismatched, strange set. You would think that after all the Govt. planning, they would be kept in a state-of-the art science facility. Intensley exploring the genetic mysteys of the occupants but no - were in a shabby bunker set that looks like it had a Victorian make over. Along with the staff looking like Scarlet O'Haras - AND with secret alternate motives that have nothing to do with the current situation. Hopefully it will all pan out.

A twist toward the end is straight out of Creepy/Eerie magazine and that worked well when I was 11

Lets hope they rock the rest - the ads looks so promisimg!

Plot holes EVERYWHERE, terrible "acting", the most unrealistic premise in an episode of television I've ever watched. Last season was my first time watching this series, so I had high hopes for this new season. To say I was let down is an understatement.

While the cinematography by Gavin Kelly goes a long way to creating the creepy dread needed to make the premise of this eighth season work, you can't help but wonder if that's all that's making it work. Sure the costumes are great, but this is AHS, so it's all got to be flamboyant. The musical leitmotif(s?) are effective but this is AHS so every scene has got to be saturated in music to hammer the horror home.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk seem to have made the same mistake as in 'Cult' that taking a hot topic and finding the sheer horror in it doesn't create good dialogue, story or characters. From the very opening scene, we're introduced to Evan Peters' and Leslie Grossman's characters - two pastiches drawn with such thick strokes that the painting elephant can't even handle the brush. Later, when a character hears who else will be in a fallout shelter, her response of "rich people, of course" smacks of the same dualistic us-versus-them attitude that Murphy and Falchuk actually did well to challenge last year. It feels like the show regresses every year.

To some, this is sufficient entertainment. But Murphy and Falchuk can't even trust their fans to work out for themselves that someone jumping out of a building during a nuclear missile warning is committing suicide to not have to live through the fallout. There has always got to be someone blurting exposition. This is a show where a character's very presence commands silence when she walks into a room, but she still rings a bell, because... it looks cool? You can't have a good story without genuine dialogue coming from genuine characters, and unfortunately Apocalypse stacks up too many wince-enducing moments to make it all work. Not even Sarah Paulson Evan Peters are able to make their characters seem like anything more than caricatures. And with their calibre, that's saying alot.

So it all comes down to the look of it all. Sure, there's nice creepy use made of architectural symmetry and low lighting. Candlelight reflected in champagne glasses. 'Hotel' shared that same sumptuous positive aspect, but again, Hotel was brought down by the sheer lack of vision and an inability to make anything thrown at it stick.

This reviewer will no doubt be watching the rest of the series hoping that some life can come out of this nuclear wasteland. But by the end, it might all be just another "meh"... which is admittedly not the effect you would hope a show set during a nuclear apocalypse would give you.

I have seen their other Seasons and enjoyed most, I just don't understand those who actually think this episode was good. Just, ugh.

This will be like fallout during nuclear winter and it makes you wonder how every thing will fall in place. didnt lead into any direct story arch except with langdon which obviously is the antichrist. they leave you with the world ends and the apocalypse if they keep every episode with out a preview it truly is the apocalypse.

Well I got to say that this was one of the most amazing season premieres that I've ever seen in my entire life. And I can already say that Ms.Wilhemina Venable & Evie Gallant & Mallory & Coco & finally Dinah Stevens are my five favorite characters. But mostly Venable & Evie are my most favorite. And I cannot believe that in the end of the episode they showed Cody Fern's character offering to invite everyone who lives in Outpost 3 to another facility. But during the beginning of the episode really felt like it was all real. And I really love the theme song, it's a combination of Murder House & Coven & Apocalypse all in one. Murphy, you've done it again.

Yawn. Just plain lazy writing, nothing new, especially in the format. Too many questions within first 20 mins, just falling into everything else, ooh lets dress in 19th century clothing, lets have some homosexuals and possible lesbians, lets have elitism and the poor, lets get rid of technology and use candles and fire in a bunker (seriously), ooh a faceless corporation, now called a co-operative. I could go on if it wasnt for the fine actors (although one looks like she has given up) I'd rate this twaddle at a minus. People have praised the series far too much, it's not bubblegum for the eyes, it's just spoon feeding people with no true imagination.

I was really taken aback by this episode. The last 2 seasons of AHS have been rather mediocre but this one rasied the bar up. It was gritty, creepy, and contained a fair amount of humor too! The new narrative seems too have a great perspective and I'm tremendously excited to see how the crossover will play out.

Little Horror, suggested Apocalypse, bad acting all around. Cheesy dialogue, so many errors/goofs, lack of explanation and lead characters that have about as much appeal as a colonoscopy!

Joan Collins is playing herself, since she can't act. The others are just silly pawns in a secretive game.

18 months and no one is thin and starving?

If Karen Carpenter were alive, I'm sure she'd not want her music used in this piece of the garbage from Ryan Murphy's lack of imagination!

Even butched out Kathy Bates couldn't save this schlock from being a disaster.

Every season so far has had fun to amazing starter episodes that reel you in to the season. From Murder House to Cult they all had one thing in common; Horror. Not all seasons panned out afterwards *cough* Cult *cough* but the beginning was always the best. Apocalypse threw out everything with this episode. I felt like I was watching a pitch to AHS from the same people who brought us Sharknado. Cheesy, cliche, poorly acted and uninteresting characters made the opening laughable.

I know these actors can do better but the direction is off and the script as well. I knew we weren't going to be thrown into the crossover immediately as we needed to be introduced to the threat, new characters and this seasons plot. That is where this problem is none of these characters are likable, or relatable. Venable was at first until she was left in a room with Kathy Bates then she was thrown out the window as well. Then we get Fabio err... Michael Langdon who feels like he would fit in with the Twilight vampires when he gets to talking. And can we get rid of Coco soon? That would be great.

Overall this episode is a 3 tops thanks to Evan Peters... ehem shower. I just hope this season doesnt kill AHS for me hoping for the best this season. I love Ryan Murphy and what hes brought us (Glee, AHS, and Scream Queens) but he might need a vacation if this is yet another dud.

Roanoke was an agony but this episode itself was far beyond that whole season. It was even beyond Alien: Covenant!

The screenplay was a disaster - the clichés, the storytelling, the dramaturgy, the characters, the dialogues... every part of the writing was just plain stupidity. Even Kathy Bates could not alleviate my pain with her dull character. "Stu is stew" - is this really the best piece of humour we get?

At some points I felt that maybe it could be a John Waters-like gag but it is too weak for that as well. Where is Nip/tuck...?

I'm done with this series.
MEGA FREEDY

I have been a fan and every seasons' premiere had a goosebumps element to it, some significantly better than others, but this one didn't move me at all. The set up, new actors, and the mainstream-ness of the topic combined just made this a painful experience. I hope they preserve their originality and don't give into popular culture nonsense just for profits or whatever.

Trash. Terrible script. Makes absolutely no sense. Please explain to me how horse drawn carriages survived a nuclear blast but cars didn't. And then that chick from misery just shoots the horses for no reason? They eat a cube "containing all the necessary vitamins to survive." News flash: people don't survive off of vitamins. This writer really needs to see a nutritionist. Or just anyone with an average iq who doesn't try to survive off of vitamins. Who and why are these two random ladies in charge of the only living people on the planet? Why did the driver at the beginning of the episode literally sacrafice his life to kill 2 random airport employees when there was AMPLE room on the plane? That kid made a really good point when he asks why the hell a former boys boarding school was built underground. Why do all the people in the strong hold just abide by these awful rules when they outnumber the two crazy ladies? Where did lady Gaga go? She killed it! Don't we have enough post apocalyptic tv shows? AMS has always been campy, but it was lovably campy. This is excruciating.

I have to say i was afraid this season would be as bad as the two last seasons but i guess i was wrong. This was s very good start and i think this season is going to be better and better trough the season. The storyline is really good, and some of the characters are very interesting but sadly, some are very boring and poorly written as well.

The first episode is however very good filmed and is beautiful to look at. It is clear that they have used a very big amount of money this season and it needed that. I Am very excited to see Jessica Lange come back later this season who is one of the greatest actresses on the planet and will definetly make this season even better just for the one episode she will be in.

Do not listen to the haters, this episode is great and you should definetly watch it. American horror story is finaly going back to how it was!

Great way to start off a season which seems largely based on end of world conspiracy & the "new world order"/"Illuminati," and the conspiracies behind their satanic ritualism. Being selected based on genetic make up is a perfect example of this. Did anyone else catch the news anchorman say "I can't believe we finally did this," as if he was a part of the global conspiracy to initiate the end times? Definitely excited to see where this season goes.

A season 1 and season 3 crossover? I hope so, but not seeing it so far. Early days but characters feel very cliche, and a post apocalyptic World has been done a thousand times before. For me season 2 was a personal favourite and I'm hoping I'll say the same about season 8. It's a shame but I feel the show has been on the downward slope since season 5 finished. It seems to have forgotten its roots and season 7 was just plain awful, with season 6 spent mostly with actors SHOUTING all the time.

Why didn't they just stop this series after AHS "Hotel"? Jumped the shark much? Again, again, and again. I doubt Joan Collins needed the work THIS bad as to have to trudge through this trash. No doubt it would have been better to be on the outside of Outpost Three and dead than to be suffer on the looney bin on the inside with the pretentious costumes, sets, ungodly boredom and insufferable roommates. Is Kathy Bates the new Aunt Lydia?
