Sir Egbert is the guardian of Mabel Bentworthy and had cared for her indirectly ever since the death of her parents years before. On her reaching seventeen years of age he wrote to her boarding school asking that she come home. She arrived and then he told her that she was no longer a girl, but was reaching womanhood and must don her first long clothes. She did so. Slowly but surely Cupid played his game and Sir Egbert found himself in love with Mabel, but Mabel had meantime met and been won by a younger man and Sir Egbert had to admit to himself that he was too old for her. Some days after this came about and he had given his consent to the attachment between her and her lover, a little girl got her foot caught in a switch at a railroad crossing and a train thundered down upon her.
