Madeline Jekyll (Helen Gardner) is in love with Robert Mayhew (Marian Wolfe), but discovers her father (J. H. Lewis) has already promised her in marriage to John Daggerts (Edward Elkas), a politician. In return, Daggerts has promised to help get Jekyll elected governor. Madeline overhears Daggerts and Baron Stana (Paul Scardon) threatening to expose Jekyll because he has forged Daggerts' name to a note. To save her father from incrimination, she agrees to marry Daggerts. Jekyll learns of his daughter's sacrifice and dies. In a dream, Stana appears to Madeline and tells her that to escape Daggerts, she must become a hard and reckless woman. Stana takes her to a saloon, where a young man falls in love with her, only to meet death. Madeline sees herself as old and forlorn, and when Stana taunts her, she kills him. Upon awakening from her dream, she learns her father has died. Daggerts and Stana argue. When Daggerts tries to shoot Stana, the bullets have no effect. Stana laughs and ...
