Intrigue abounds at the Grand Waimea Hotel, an exclusive Hawaiian escape for the wealthy, powerful and beautiful. Hawaiian-born Jason Matthews runs the hotel as the assistant manager and makes sure every guest gets everything they need. But when former flame, Nicole Booth, arrives as the hotel's new Director of Guest Relations, Jason's world is turned upside down. But the Grand Waimea owner, Vincent Colville, is staying on top of him to make sure his past with Nicole won't affect their work life. Just as interesting as the hotel's wild and crazy clientele is its staff, which is filled with friends, thrill-seekers, con artists, and dreamers in paradise. Waitress M.J. Bevans, Jason's surrogate little sister and roommate, is just waiting for her t-shirt design business to blossom into a fashion empire. When Alexandra Hudson (played by Shannen Doherty) first arrives on the show, she is coming out of her limo and is greeted by a valet. He asks her how she likes Hawaii and she replies, "It beats the hell out of Beverly Hills." This is an obvious reference to her days as Brenda Walsh on the teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990).
The first view in the pilot episode is of an alarm clock activating. The time is 0545 and the date displayed is 6-14. This coincides with the actual date of the first airing, 14 June 2004.
The hotel's name is a play on "Grand Wailea", a five-star hotel on Maui's southwest coastline.
The auction to sell off stage items, props, and furniture was held on May 22, 2005 at the Diamond Head Film Studios (Honolulu, HI). 515 lots were up for bid.
The show has been axed twice: before it was aired, then given a chance and axed at the end of the first season.
The show's theme song was "Home In Paradise" by Unwritten Law.
When Jason Matthews is in the Surf Shop, his father states that the especially sturdy surf board he is building is for "Laird". He is referring to Laird Hamilton, one of the premier big wave surfers in the world.
