Down a Dark Hall (2018) Online

After the death of her father when she was a child, Kit Gordy has grown up as a troubled teen for disgust of her mother Ginny and her stepfather Dave Dabrowski. Called to the principal's office of her high school and accused of a failed attempt to burn it, Kit is expelled from the high school, but Dr. Heather Sinclair, member of the staff of the Blackwood Boarding School, appears to offer her a place in the next school year. Ginny enlists Kit against her will in a try to correct her daughter, and Kit travels Blackwood, an old, isolated and dark mansion in the middle of a forest outside the city. There she meets her companions: nice Izzy, shy Ashley, reluctant Sierra and borderline Veronica, so troubled teens as her own. In the dinner presentation, Kit and the other girls meet Madame Duret, Blackwood's headmistress, and the rest of the staff: Pr. Farley (maths), Jules Duret (music), Heather Sinclair (arts) and Mrs. Olonsky, Madame Duret's rude right-hand to keep the peace in Blackwood....

The premise is intriguing, and you can tell it tried it's darn hardest to be a successful supernatural, suspense drama/thriller, but this film just could not weave together these elements well enough to tell a captivating story. The actors were great, but the writing and character development was lacking. The cinematography and grand setting was beautiful, but was not accompanied by a well written story. The first act had promise, the second was questionable and then the final third just fell flat on its face. By not layering successful elements of supernatural horror in a consistent method, the final act's horror reveal, which should have been thrilling, just look plain weird. I was really looking forward to this movie, but it failed to deliver a decent film despite having all the right ingredients.

This is all you need to know about this movie:
  • First Act shows promise and intrigue, with decent and well-acted characters.
  • The Second Act treads upon questionable ground, straddling somewhere between "Umm, maybe?" and "Umm, No."
  • The Third Act is a complete mess, from start to finish, where the movie tracks off the rails, where the wheels fall off the wagon completely and utterly.

The end leaves you with a firestorm of garbage (literally); a story that was told so poorly; with throwaway characters and plot lines that leave you regretting you stuck around.

The perfect example of work that starts well and finishes terribly, just as so many movies and novels before it. I simply don't think most people understand how to tell a complete story. Usually because most people have a good idea, and start that idea before finishing it, only to try and make up a slapdash ending before they run out of time or simply become bored with their work. There's obviously more to it than that with movies ... but who cares the cause and reason, this one is just more suffering of the same. Terrible.

The outcast troubled teenager Katherine "Kit" Gordy (AnnaSophia Robb) is invited to study in Blackwood and her mother and stepfather drive her to the old and isolated manor. She is welcomed by the headmistress Madame Duret (Uma Thurman) with four other colleagues and forced to develop their talents in mathematics and arts. Soon Kit realizes that supernatural forces are possessing them and increasing their talents. "Down a Dark Hall" is an almost good film with a promising and intriguing beginning. The storyline is good, but the screenplay is flawed after the confused ball in the manor. The performances are not bad, but Uma Thurman has a weird accent and AnnaSophia Robb does not convince as a seventeen year-old teenager despite the good acting. The cinematography is too dark and difficult to see. It is a pity since very few improvements would be necessary to make a great film. My vote is six.

I had high hopes with the one after seeing the preview. The Flitting shadows that disappear had me intrigued. But no, it was not to be. There was a whole lot of movie, but really a whole lot of not much. When I rate horror movies I usually give a little leeway as there are so many bad horrors out there. Slowly but surely though there are so many horror movies entering the realm that are just nothing. P.S. Uma does a really annoying job at pretending to be a person pretending to be french.

Boring incomprehensible plot that utterly fails to keep the promise of the beginning. Bad!

I just watched it yesterday, with no big expectations, and it truly surprised me. It's way more elegant and classy than I expected, well-performed and beautifully shot. The music is unbelievable, the piano scenes and the way they're shot shocked me and moved me. If this is a teen movie, then it must the best and classiest teen movie in a long, long time.

Start out ok, but then falls apart. Fake accents and a terrible plot line. Gets worse and worse. Don't waste your time. Couldn't wait for it to be over.

Really, what a brilliant piece of trash! Can't believe I wasted part of my life watching it!

I recommend you watch "Pelé's movie" instead! :D

Nothing special here. From beginning to end, there is almost no redeeming quality. Find another movie to fill your night.

Just finished watching this and to be honest, I couldn't wait for it to end. This movie just shows you can have a great cast, decent score, and a great setting but still fall by the wayside. It's not terrible, just meh. It gave off vibes of "The Orphanage" (2007) but it is nowhere near the class of that movie.

I've learnt not to listen to the bad reviews on here, it's best just to watch a movie and decide yourself if you enjoyed it or not.

Now its official, Rodrigo Cortés can't give a proper ending to a movie. The main problem with Down a Dark Hall is that it is not as bad as you expected it was going to be (again, marketing departments should make a better effort with their trailers).

The first hour works fine, the suspense is well built and there are a few atmospheric scenes and decent scares. But my main issues comes with the last act, to be fair it is not a complete disaster... but almost, movie is mainly saved by a superb AnnaSophia Robb, she steals the show.

I wont get into spoilers but from the ballroom scene the movie turns into a ridiculous mess, rushed to an unsatisfying cliché ending. But also some wrong script choices, a few cheesy dialogue lines and the usual, painfully bad, cheap, EVIDENT CGI. Plus the poor locations, the forced all-American style (art direction is weak), the ridiculous villain(s) and an overacted Uma Thurman (with a weird look and a silly accent) doesn't help either.

I didn't expect this film to be any good, I hate TWILIGHT and, to be frank, most teen movies. I find them plain and full of dumb characters, and pop songs seem to be enough to try to make the audiences feel interested on the screen. But wow, this film is something. It's elegant, it has class, it builds tension with almost only light and sound. The music is beautiful too, and the young actresses are amazing, especially AnnaSophia Robb, who's never been this good. Uma Thurman is as subtle as a villain as she's powerful too, dangerous and intelligent, a true manipulator. BLACKWOOD made me think, for some reason, in movies like WALKABOUT and in films by Aronofsky. I wish there were more of these movies today that still respect film making and their audiences. I'm not that young anymore, I actually have just been father, but the ending almost made me cry, for a number of reasons. This film shouldn't have been good. But it certainly is.

Firstly i they missed the chances, they read novel but they can't follow its story, second they have a problem with lights, i when she entered in blackwood, the lights are gone, i mean production company have not enough money to buy lights to make scenes understandable, all scenes shot in darkness, which doesn't connect me to the movie, all scares, all faces of characters wasted in darkness, director is so clever he efforts on only last 10 minutes in the film, whole time the film goes too boring, according to the trailer the film premise looks decent but in the movie there is nothing expect darkness and boredom of 1 hour 36 minutes, even characters are too uninteresting, AnnaSophia Robb, just giving expressions and anger in whole movie which looks super boring, she done average job but forgettable like the movie, Uma Thurman fake accent annoyed too much more than a movie, Isabelle Fuhrman nothing special, Victoria Moroles gives her best, she excels in many scenes especially her entry is good, she is just relief in the movie, Noah Silver charmingly done his role best but have a limited screen time,Pip Torrens just okay, so there is nothing in the movie, there are some scenes which wasted in darkness, story wise they missed the chance,

This is my first review. This movie felt like such a terrible movie I just had to add a review.

Down a dark hall tells a story that is so cliche, I literally rolled my eyes severwl times. From the characters to the horror, to the ending, it was just one cliche right after the other.

I gave the movie 3 out of 10, because while the story and script were terrible, the acting wqs pretty good, and the filmography was great. Basically the only redeeming part of tbe movie

Saw at the theater today. Really enjoyed it. Not your typical teen horror film. Had great acting, atmosphere, cinematography, and sound design. Even gave me a couple jumps, but that's not what this film is ultimately about. Would have been a 10/10 if the second act was a little more developed and had a stronger friendship/relationship between the girls. Thought the adults, Uma Thurman and the actress that played Kit's mom were great. At first I thought Uma Thurman's accent was going to throw me, but ended up liking it. This film has a cool concept at the end. Be patience. But may not be great for those with short attention spans, ADD, or lack of depth. Definitely not your typical teen movie, nor is it your typical horror film. Has an artsy feel to it and could be something that gets more attention later as these actresses careers take off.

I read this book a long time ago and I still have the original paperback version. The book is amazing and scares you in subtle ways, whereas the movie wastes too much time with the antagonism between characters and very little on what the story is supposed to be about. They changed the movie so much that it is unrecognizable from the book, and the casting is way off. I've waited years for a decent movie version of this book and alas, it seems I'm going to have to keep waiting. My advice? Skip the movie, read the book. You won't be sorry.

I really enjoyed this film. I'm not going to talk about the great cinematography and soundtrack or the brilliant actors (all outstanding), but about the story itself. Don't expect something like Twilight at all. This story hides much more for you to explore. The atmosphere, all the different details are there to make you feel uncomfortable to make you wander in an old dark school that could well reflect your inner self. Don't miss it!!!

Not sure what the reviewers who rated this a 10 were watching.

No substance, nonsensical story line and terrible acting by mid twenty-one things pretending to be teens !!

Awful.

I felt this movie didn't quite live up to it's potential. It had an interesting premise but seemed to lack something so it's basically a missed opportunity.

Had high hopes of this considering the cast list but within the first half hour this diminished.Sluggish storyline with inevitable ending.Must try better would be my score as this is the lowest thus far I have rated a film and can't give it any real credit except for the setting but thats really it.

I had not heard of this movie. Didn't know ONE thing about it before I watched it. I was pleasantly surprised. The acting was wonderful, the score/music was absolutely beautiful, and the plot ran nice and steady. Not any huge surprise twists or turns but the movie provides enough with several interesting characters, setting and music that I didn't need them. (And Isn't Uma always fascinating to watch?!} I thought it was a very well made movie that an average family (although I would put the littles to bed...I'd say 10 and 11 years and up) could enjoy together. It isn't gory, it doesn't have foul language or violence. No sex or nudity. Just a NICE creepy strory presented with a high level of class!!
