Despite many lifetimes of training, Colin has failed to vanquish Marcus on the great battlefields of history. Can he finish what he started and stop Marcus? Unlike most anime, the mouths of the characters in the film were drawn to match the English dialogue.
The American version of the film is shorter than the Japanese version. Producer Galen Walker said in an interview that "about seven or eight" scenes were cut "just for timing, and just for pace of story", and admitted that director Yoshiaki Kawajiri was unhappy with the cuts. An opening exposition text, which is traditional for Highlander films, was also added to the American version.
Doc's voice is provided by Jim Byrnes, who played Joe Dawson on the TV series Surematu (1992). Doc is shown to be missing a leg from the knee down, a reference to Byrnes's real-life disability - Byrnes lost both his legs from the knee down when he was struck by a car in the 1970s, a disability which was written into the TV series, which established that Dawson lost his legs after stepping on a landmine in Vietnam. Byrnes also voices the bartender who serves MacLeod, another reference to the Dawson character, who owned a blues bar on the TV series.
The film was a joint American/Japanese production, with the American production company writing, producing, and providing music and voice acting, and the Japanese production company directing, storyboarding, and animating.
The character of Amergan was modeled on the character of Merlin from the film Excalibur (1981). Scott McNeil, who voiced Amergan, is a fan of Nicol Williamson, the actor who played Merlin in Excalibur (1981).
This is a loose spin-off of Surematu (1986).
2nd animated Highlander installment that takes place in a post apocalyptic future, which an evil immortal rules the world. The other was the animated spin-off television series Highlander: The Animated Series (1994).
The film takes place in 125 and 2187.
Alistair Abell auditioned for the role of Colin MacLeod over the phone. Abell auditioned with three other actors, and director Yoshiaki Kawajiri chose Abell when the American producers asked him to choose who he thought was best for the role.
Highlander: The Search for Vengeance succeeded which Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) failed. The film although it takes place in the future, kept the same mythology and elements and Colin MacLeod was not an extra terrestrial from another planet.
A PS3 game of Highlander which was entitled Highlander: The Game had been developed, but was canceled. However, a trailer for the game was released. In the trailer, Colin MacLeod in a church in present day NYC has a flashback of challenging his immortal lover to a duel and embraces and kisses her and Connor fights an immortal in a forest, which he is stabbed and falls into a lake. He returns to fight his immortal lover had been beheaded by the immortal in the forest and back in the church in present NYC, MacLeod leaves and comes across the immortal whom fought him in the forest and prepares for armed combat.
Like Highlander: The Animated Series (1994) the film takes place in a post apocalyptic future which an evil immortal rules the world and a McLeod immortal sets out to stop him.
Ty Olsson and Mike Dopud were considered to voice the character of Colin Macleod.
In the uncut Japanese dub, there was more of an emphasis on the the idea of Connor being a fool who was only focused on vengeance while Marcus was the opposite who was able to thrive through the destruction of all the empires he was associated with over time. This was specifically talked upon during the original extended WW2 scene in the church when Marcus conveys to Connor that for the 2000 years they had lived he had learned to write poetry in 36 different languages, could paint like Rembrandt, and could play piano like Liszt, all the while Connor did nothing but focus on his hate. This further explains why Marcus always referred to Connor as 'barbarian' (and not by his name), and why he had such a cavalier approach to Connor as a threat throughout all their encounters.
This introduces Colin MacLeod as the fourth and last member of the Clan MacLeod to be an immortal, being preceded by Connor MacLeod in Surematu (1986) (appearing too in Highlander II: The Quickening (1991), Highlander III: The Sorcerer (1994) and Highlander: Endgame (2000)), Duncan McLeod in Surematu (1992) (appearing too in Highlander: Endgame (2000) and Highlander: The Source (2007)) and Quentin MacLeod in Highlander: The Animated Series (1994).
