Retired Fox-Hound agent Solid Snake is told that a group of terrorists known as the Black Chamber has stolen a cargo plane carrying nukes and Metal Gear. His mission is to infiltrate the enemy fortress named Galuade, which turns out to really be Outer Heaven (the fortress Snake infiltrated seven years earlier).
The first "official" Metal Gear game not directed by Hideo Kojima.
The design of Metal Gear was based on one of Yoji Shinkawa's unused sketches of Metal Gear REX from Metal Gear Solid (1998).
Upon completing the game, a CODEC frequency can be seen in the closing credits. Tuning in during a new game will then launch a radio serial, with one episode available in each chapter. See also: Alternate Versions.
Unlike the Metal Gears from other games in the series, the name of this game's Metal Gear is never disclosed. However, promotional material reveals that it is called Metal Gear GANDER.
