This film was never actually made. According to Christopher Showerman, "Between the Sand and the Sky actually only became a 4 minute teaser trailer that we put together to try to get the movie made. Unfortunately we never were able to put enough funding together to do the entire project."

Originally recorded as an audio play, with Showerman, Zelda Rubinstein, and Chris Durand among the voice cast.

The writer reportedly wrote the role of 'Boss' with Sam Elliott in mind, but changed his mind immediately upon meeting with Muse Watson.

The original title of the film was "Last Cowboy", but the title was changed as to not mislead people into thinking it was linked, or a remake of, films of the same title.

Gregory Smith (brother of Douglas Smith, who appears in the film), was also approached about a role in the film at one stage.

James Keach was approached to direct.
