A house is constantly shown to the left, across the street, from the Hecks' home. This is the set house used in Bewitched (1964). To the right of the Hecks' home is the house used for The Partridge Family (1970) .
The original pilot episode starred Ricki Lake as Frankie Heck. Most of the cast was replaced after that production, with Atticus Shaffer (Brick) being the only actor remaining.
In the season three premiere the hiker played by Ray Romano tells Frankie "In an alternate universe you and I could have been very happy together."
The character Brick, played by Atticus Shaffer, is rumored to have Asperger syndrome or some sort of autism. He also possesses eidetic memory. He also has osteogenesis imperfecta type 2 which causes him to break his bones easily.
Doris Roberts, who played Brick's teacher Ms. Rinsky during the second season, had earlier co-starred with Patricia Heaton on Everybody Loves Raymond (1996).
Mike (Neil Flynn) gets caught singing Boston's "More Than a Feeling" in the car. In Scrubs (2001), Flynn's character "The Janitor" is part of an air band that plays a version of the same song.
The town of Orson, IN, is fictional, but based on the real-life Indiana town of Jasper.
The fountain that appears in a few episodes is the fountain from the opening credits of Friends.
The family visits a local attraction called Brown County, which exists in real life in Indiana.
Patricia Heaton formerly starred in Everybody Loves Raymond (1996). Her husband from that series, Ray Romano, guest-starred in a flashback episode.
When the show started, Axl is a high school freshman and he's played by a 19 year old. Sue, a seventh grader, is an 18 year old actress. Brick is supposed to be in second grade, but the actor playing him is 11 years old.
Marsha Mason, who plays Frankie's (Patricia Heaton) mother, played Paula McFadden in The Goodbye Girl (1977). In an updated version of the movie, The Goodbye Girl (2004), Heaton plays the same character.
Greer Grammer, who plays Axl's love interest April, is the daughter of Kelsey Grammer. Patricia Heaton had earlier co-starred with Kelsey Grammar on the TV series Back to You (2007).
According to co-creator and producer Eileen Heisler, Brick's personality quirks were inspired by those of her own son.
Sue was born in a Leap Year.
When the Heck family goes on an outing, Frankie always forgets the blue bag full of snacks when someone is hungry.
Sue's birthday is mentioned several time as being the 29th of February, which is the Leap Year Day. However, this is impossible. Sue graduated high school in 2015, which--with a February birthday--means she would have had to have been born in 1997. As Leap Year occurs only every four years, and each year is a multiple of four, the closest Leap Years to Sue's birth would have been 1996 and 2000, which would mean that in 2015 she would have turned either 19 or 15, respectively. There was also no mention of Sue's birthday in Season 7, despite 2016 being a Leap Year, though she is referenced as being 19 years old in Season 7, Episode 18, which first aired in March, meaning she has celebrated her birthday already.
Extreme amounts of sugar make Brick act and seem 'normal'.
Axl's middle name is Redford.
Sue has had five boyfriends thus far: Brad, Matt, Darrin, Jeremy, and Tyler. For years, she has been romantically interested in Sean Donahue, but most people think they're like brother and sister - and that their relationship is platonic.
David S. Rosenthal's name appears on posters in the boys bedroom. He also seems to be the author of Brick's fictitious favourite books about Planet Nowhere.
Axl's first girlfriend, Morgan, broke up with him five times.
Mike always seems to wear a plaid shirt with jeans except for one time when he wore a Hawaiian one.
Cindy stands five feet and seven and a half inches tall.
When Sue was little, her mom made an arrangement with the nurse's office at school so that she could call Frankie everyday at 10. She also did not participate in Brownies unless Frankie was the leader.
Atticus Shaffer (Brick) shares a birthday with Moe Howard of the Three Stooges - June 19th.
The double use of Sue's first name is because her first name was accidentally initially written in the middle name spot when filling out her birth certificate.
Sue had an overbite crossbite, which was over-corrected to an "unprecedented" overbite underbite.
Thirty-two is Axl's number in the football and baseball team.
Axl is Mike's favorite child.
In the season one finale, Neil Flynn's character mentions a brain trust.
In the spelling bee episode, Brick ends up losing because of his little repetition tic, making a Running Gag into something truly hilarious.
Brick doesn't believe in God.
Brick plays the French horn.
Frankie hates Mother's Day.
Sue believes in God.
Axl is often sitting on the couch in front of the TV. Many times he is seen watching TV with only in his boxers.
Sue likes waffles.
Frankie is an eternal optimist.
In Season 6 Episode 21, "Two of a Kind", Frankie's father Tag (Jerry Van Dyke) visits the Heck house to meet up with his brother Dutch (Dick Van Dyke). The two men are brothers in reality, too.
Episode 13 of Season 3, "The Map," is an episode about Aunt Ginny's funeral. This episode was done because the actress who played Aunt Ginny, Frances Bay, had actually passed away.
Season 9 has been announced as the final season for the series.
