Haru's mother is voiced by Pat Musik who is the mother of the actress that voices Katara (Mae Whitman).
George Takei, the voice of the warden, had first-hand experience as a child of U.S. Japanese internment camps similar, in spirit, to the internment camps of earth benders depicted in the episode.
The Warden mentions that the prison is made of steel and that there is nothing for the benders to use their earth-bending. Later in this series and in the sequel series, Legend of Korra, Toph learn the special earth-bending skill of metal-bending.
