The early part of the episode is much like a thriller. Tessa Noel has witnessed the murder of fellow artist Anne Wheeler. The police do not believe her, because they can not find Wheeler's corpse. After questioning Tessa's own sanity, the body is discovered at a nearby river.
The episode seems to feature a darker version of the relationship between Duncan MacLeod and Tessa Noel. Duncan is an immortal, Tessa is a mortal artist. They love each other and he has revealed his secrets to her. The villain of the episode Andrew Ballin is also immortal. He too had a loving relationship with a mortal artist, Anne Wheeler. He too revealed his immortality to her. Years later, Ballin wants to end the relationship and move on. Wheeler refuses to let him go and threatens to expose his secret to the world. He kills her to silence her and to escape her possessive love.
It is implied in the episode that the reason Andrew Ballin wanted to end his relationship with his mortal lover was her aging. Immortals do not age past the point of their original death. After several decades of a relationship with Anne Wheeler, Ballin had not aged at all. But she was much older than the woman he had first met. He needed younger women as lovers.
Andrew Ballin is a typical villain for another genre, crime fiction. He is the Chief of Detectives of the local police. He uses his high-ranking position to keep tabs on other immortals and their deaths, and to make sure that his own crimes are not going to receive a proper investigation.
Andrew Ballin spends part of the episode trying to kill Tessa Noel. She is the only eyewitness to the murder of his former lover.
