Mary Tyler Moore Rhoda's Sister Gets Married (1970–1977) Online

Rhoda invites Mary to accompany her for an exciting weekend in New York City to attend the wedding of Rhoda's younger sister, Debbie Morgenstern. The weekend doesn't end up being quite what Mary expected when she agreed to go. Instead of staying at a hotel, Mary is invited to stay with Rhoda's parents. And as the impartial third party, Mary ends up being the mediator between Rhoda and Ida in what is the major issue of the weekend. As Debbie is her younger daughter, Ida believes that Rhoda is unhappy being the proverbial old maid. So Ida does whatever she can to ruin Debbie's wedding to make Rhoda happy. Rhoda, in turn, is happy for her sister and does whatever she can to leave before the wedding so that Ida won't ruin Debbie's wedding. The cycle between mother and oldest daughter goes full circle when Ida believes Rhoda's want to leave is because of her unhappiness in Debbie getting married first, which strengthens Ida's resolve to ruin Debbie's wedding. A thirty year old letter may ...

When Valerie Harper's show Rhoda (1974) launched, her younger sister, Debbie, was dropped, and another bit of 'ret-conning,' she gained a 'new' younger sister, Brenda.

The hysterical and touching letter which Ida wrote to Rhoda at the time of her birth was, in fact a real letter. Episode writer, Karyl Millers mother had written it, and Ms Miller (at the time, Ms Geld) wrote it down, verbatim.

Poor Mary; she accepts Rhoda's offer to go to New York for the weekend. That sounds exciting at first, but then you can see the motive: to attend Rhoda's sister's wedding. That's still okay but the worst is yet to come: living for several days with Rhoda's parents!

Is "brutal" the right word? Maybe just "strange" would be better. IMDb describes them as "overbearing," which is a better word.

While Mary is forced into staying at their house and sleeping on the couch instead of the nice hotel she had booked overlooking Central Park, Rhoda and her young sister have to contend mainly with "Ma (Ida)," played wonderfully by Nancy Walker.

Walker is perfect as the Jewish mom and Harold Gould's good as her dad, "Martin." In her twisted logic, "Ma" tries to downplay the marriage at every turn, thinking Rhoda is miserable because her sister's getting married, and she isn't. That's not true but there is no changing Ma's mind and the jokes in here come fast-and-furious. In what could be some uncomfortable scenes, the dialog is so good you can't help but laugh at the situation while at the same time feeling sorry for Mary and the two Morgenstern sisters.

The opening bit was funny with Ted trying to do a promo for his job. He screws it up so bad, Lou winds up giving up on the idea. There is no way Ted is going to look professional, even trying to fake it! However, at the end, they give it another shot and just know Ted is going to mess it up somehow.

Rhoda talks Mary into going to New York with her for her sister's wedding. She promises Mary that they will be able to see a couple shows and do some sightseeing. But she is walking into a trap. The Morgenstern insist that she stay with them and that leads to all kinds of problems. Rhoda actually decides to leave with Mary stuck there. Nancy Walker once again plays the obnoxious Jewish mother who can't enjoy anything to let anything go. The other much funnier bit is Ted Baxter trying to do a promotional video. All he has to do is tear off a piece of news copy and carry it to a desk, then pretend he is answering the phone. He just can't seem to get it down. Lou, of course, is having a conniption. Not a great episode but some good stuff.

This episode is about Mary and Rhoda traveling to NYC for the wedding of Rhoda's only and younger sister. The writers obviously forgot that in Season one, Rhoda tells Mary that her sister had married.
