Did I or did I not see a car driving down the side street at the beginning of this show? I thought that I was going to see someone speaking of the past escapades of Paladin.

When Paldin finds the dead body of his friend Charlie Blackburn, he returns it to Blackburn's home town, where he is met with a cold reception. He discovers Blackburn had run up against the will of the powerful timber baron Mr. Loring (Douglas Kennedy). He also discovers Loring's secret: that his son Keith (Hampton Fancher) is a psycho killer who guns innocent people down without reason or remorse, and the whole town has been helping Loring cover it up.

There's lots of mystery and action in this show, including a big fight between Paladin and the older Loring where Paldin gets as good as he gives. It's surprising to see the older guy give Paladin such a battle. It's also surprising to see such an obvious stunt man in for Boone on the fight. Usually they do a much better job of disguising the fact its NOT Boone in the scene.

Harry Carey Jr. does well playing the town sheriff who's decided to sit this whole thing out until he finds himself staring down the barrel of a gun, but Hampton Fancher is less than memorable as the psycho killer. It's really too bad. The role is one an actor really could have sunk his teeth into and really ran with. But Fancher is mostly forgettable, wasting a fine opportunity to make a mark and stop people saying: "Who's Hampton Fancher?"
