We are called upon to view the misery and sufferings of a man who has been unable to obtain employment for several months, and has been reduced to absolute and dire distress. In his despair he yields to the temptation of trespassing upon the estate of a wealthy gentleman in hopes of shooting something to carry home to his starving family. He succeeds in killing a hare, but before he can get away he is discovered and arrested by the gamekeeper. The wretched man being desperate wounds the gamekeeper and flees. In scaling a wall, he loses his footing and falls, injuring himself, so that he is unable to rise. He is soon overtaken by the pursuing gamekeeper, and dragged to the latter's cottage. As the gamekeeper is writing out the warrant for the man's arrest he is moved by an inspiration, and suddenly becomes touched by the awful misery of the captive and decides to show him clemency.
