An old clerk, whose age had told against him in the battle of life, found himself unable to obtain employment. At last, driven to despair, he heard of a dance hall where waiters were wanted, and applied for a position there. He would have met with another rebuff, but the proprietor took a fancy to the old clerk's pretty daughter, who had accompanied him, and offered him a position if he would let the girl sing in the chorus of the company which entertained the patrons. The old clerk indignantly refused, but his daughter, realizing their need, persuaded him to accept the offer. The environment of the dance hall was offensive to the girl's refined nature, but she bore it bravely for her father's sake, for she knew he would have difficulty in obtaining work elsewhere. The proprietor forced his attentions upon her, but she met his advances with such dignity that his admiration deepened into respect and he asked her to be his wife. She refused him and he threatened to discharge her father....
