An accident during filming killed Stuntwoman Janet Wilder and injured her husband, Stuntman Scott Wilder, and his father, Stuntman Glenn R. Wilder. A boat was supposed to go over a ramp, fly over a mangrove hedge, land between two other boats, and stop in the water. Instead, the boat slid off the side of the ramp, flipped over, and landed in a crowd of crew and extras.
During much of the film, Joe Waters (Joe Pesci) wears a "Fish Newark and Die" t-shirt. Pesci was born in Newark, New Jersey.
Rosanna Arquette worked on this film while she was also working on Crash (1996). She flew back and forth between Florida and Toronto, Canada.
Danny Glover admitted to doing this film purely for the money.
John G. Avildsen was the film's original director. He was fired after two weeks, paid his two million dollar salary, and replaced by Christopher Cain.
John Candy and Rick Moranis were originally attached to the lead roles. But Candy died, and Moranis retired shortly after talks began.
The construction worker who says "Oh Gus!" at the beginning, is played by Tommy DeVito of The Four Seasons fame, and is a real good friend of Joe Pesci.
The film went overbudget to fifty-three million dollars.
The film's release was delayed for over a year when Disney, which was the original distributor, had it switched to their Hollywood Pictures label.
Was originally scheduled for a late summer 1996 release date, before being pushed to the 1996 holiday season, and eventually to May of 1997.
Joe Pesci and Danny Glover star together in the Lethal Weapon film franchise. In Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), there's a boat chase, where Glover and Pesci jump off the boat to avoid a falling barrel.
The knife was found wrapped in "The Bonita Banner," a bi-weekly paper published in Bonita Springs, Florida, and distributed Wednesdays and Saturdays.
John Travolta was attached to star at one point, with Steve Miner, and then Stephen Herek set to direct.
Joe Pesci and Danny Glover's only film collaboration outside of the Lethal Weapon franchise.
Despite the title, Joe (Joe Pesci) and Gus (Danny Glover) never catch any fish.
