In the subway scene, we see a woman with headphones on (hear no evil), a woman with VR goggles on (see no evil), amd a man with a health mask on (speak no evil).

Darlene (Carly Chaikin) tells Elliot (Rami Malek) "Init 1 - I'm serious" (also the name of the episode). "init 1" is one of the earliest phases of startup of the Unix operating system after a reset. So essentially Darlene is saying - let's start over.

At around 50 minutes Elliot (Rami Malek) and those he cares about are watching the Evil Corp. building collapsing, this is one of many similarities throughout the series to Fight Club (1999). In this case the similarity is to the final scene in which Jack and Marla watch as the buildings collapse.

At around 49 minutes Elliot (Rami Malek) is shown to imagine going to the house of Bill Harper (Tom Riis Farrell) (the Stone Mountain employee he berated in Mr. Robot: eps1.4_3xpl0its.wmv (2015)) to apologize.

Elliot (Rami Malek) torrents the film he and Darlene (Carly Chaikin) watch in the flashback. A torrent is a file-sharing protocol used to transfer data from peer to peer. The torrent file contains the metadata needed for users to find the desired file and download it, generally by using tracker software such as uTorrent. Torrenting is by far the most common method of illegal distribution of audio and video files, via sites such as The Pirate Bay, and is regarded as violating distribution copyrights held by audio and video producers.

Elliot (Rami Malek) and Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) play a series of chess games that keep ending in stalemate. Early in the first two games, Elliot (playing White) captures Mr. Robot's queen rook's pawn on square a5 (White's QR5) with his queen, leaving his white queen sitting unprotected and directly in front of black's rook on a6 (white's QR6). The obvious move for black, even to a low-level player, would be to capture white's queen with the rook, which would be a decisive blow to white in most games. Instead, both times Mr. Robot moves the rook clear across the board to h6 (black's KR3).

Cisco (Michael Drayer) introduces the newest conspiracy, Operation Berenstain. This may somehow relate to the children's books "The Berenstain Bears" about a family of bears teaching moral or safety-related lessons via simple story-telling. The books evolved into a series of early video games distributed by Coleco and later Broderbund that would have been at the height of their popularity when Darlene (Carly Chaikin) and Elliot (Rami Malek) were children.

Origin of the Title:

  • Init is part of the boot sequence in Linux-based operating systems. Init starts up the operating system at a designated run level, identified by a number. Init1 indicates a system is started up in single-user mode, which is generally used for problem-solving. It is roughly the same as safe mode in Windows.
  • The extension: .asec files are Android Secure Encrypted files. These files are used with Google's Android OS to prevent corruption of apps by other programs.

This episode marks the first appearance of Agent Santiago, played by Omar Metwally.

Music:

  • "The Planets, Op. 32: VII. Neptune, the Mystic". Composed by Gustav Holst (1915). Plays as Elliot (Rami Malek) dons his father's jacket and the mask, to become Mr. Robot (Christian Slater).
  • "The Planets, Op. 32: I. Mars, the Bringer of War". Composed by Gustav Holst (1914). Plays as the title card appears, following the scene above.
  • "Rainy Night in Georgia". Recorded by Brook Benton (1970). Plays as Darlene (Carly Chaikin) walks through Chinatown to meet Cisco (Michael Drayer).
  • "Into the Black". Recorded by Chromatics (2012). Plays as Darlene and Cisco meet in the Chinatown bar.
  • "Basket Case". Recorded by Twinkle Twinkle Little Rock Star (2012).
  • "Concerto-Cantata, Op. 65: IV. Arioso e corale." Composed by Henryk Mikolaj Górecki (1992).
  • "Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K. 467: II. Andante." Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1785).
  • "What Have We Done to Each Other?" from the original soundtrack for Gone Girl (2014). Recorded by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (2014).

The movie that Darlene (Carly Chaikin) and Elliot (Rami Malek) watch, The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie, is not a real film. It borrows its title and plot from Luis Buñuel's 1972 surrealist film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), reinterpreted as a 1980's low-budget slasher film. USA Network has released an eight-minute version of the film online (Available here outside the U.S.). The film was distributed by E Corp Home Entertainment, and is a VHS rip (Careful.Massacre.of.the.Bourgeoisie.1984-VHSrip.mp4) that Elliot has torrented.

All throughout the series we have been seeing plot twists left and right, the anxiety and psychosis has been a feature on most episodes. This gets old after a while, and this episode gives the series a very necessary slowing of pace to make things easier to digest.

While you won't find big developments story-wise you are fed a lot of background on different characters which , in my opinion, helps make them deeper and actually improves character development.

I hope the series keeps on with the character development and stops relying so much on the shock factor and the unexpected twists, which can only happen so many times before viewers get frustrated with the series, overall a very good episode.

I couldn't help but feel slightly underwhelmed by this episode. It wasn't badly made, it was just slow and relatively uneventful (particularly when compared to the previous episode). It is the epitome of a transitional episode. I will not go so far as to call it "filler", as I do believe that everything it setup will be important one way or another down the line. It's definitely a necessary episode. The ending got me excited to see the next one. It just isn't a particularly remarkable or memorable episode in and of itself.

Perhaps the most interesting scene in the episode is the flashback in the first ten minutes. I appreciated the way the sequence gradually ramp-ed up the tension from a casual conversation to the big moment at the end of it, accompanied by a score straight of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Some other scenes that I liked in the episode were the surprisingly heart-warming scene between Joanna and her boy-toy, the return of the BD Wong character, and Elliot's chess game with Mr Robot. I was mostly indifferent towards the rest. I am finding it increasingly implausible that Leon would be spending his time hanging out with Elliot, and increasingly irritating that I have literally no idea what is going on with Ray and his black-eyed business partner.

I did not enjoy this episode nearly so much as I had hoped that I would, but I recognize it as a necessary instalment, and still eagerly anticipate the next.

This episode was extremely boring, it felt like much more than approx 65 minutes long. I tried really hard to get through it, but there wasn't much at all that I could stay focused on, so I turned it off. Definitely a filler episode.

I want to get back into the show, so I'll read a synopsis of this episode to refresh my memory. There's no way I'm going to go through 65 minutes of nothing again.

I wasn't very happy with this episode. I did not enjoy the first sequence, it was long and I didn't get into the feeling that was wanted for it (+ I'd like to know when this flashback actually took place, couldn't understand it myself).

(mentioning scenes, no big spoilers!) The end and dream sequence was by far the best happenings in the episode, since it shows that Elliot actually crave friends and "normal company". It's all starting to feel more and more like X- files, conspiracies that you don't understand everything about and the music choices were really weird? I am a big fan of Mr Robot, and this episode felt like a middle one. Some new things, not much, will not remember it for the better. I am disappointed though, since the starter episodes have been marvellous. Maybe I didn't give this episode as much concentration as it should have, but I honestly couldn't stare at the screen all the time during this episode.
