One of the problems with filming the scene with the piglets running away from the children, was that the little pigs really enjoyed being caught and cuddled so were very disinclined to run away.
For the scene where Nanny McPhee effectively takes over the unruly children, making them apparently start hurting themselves, a mime artist was brought in to train the children in the arts of mime and puppeteering. The scene itself took three weeks to rehearse.
Originally, it appeared Emma Thompson would not be able to play Professor Trelawney again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), due to her duties as writer and producer of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010). However, filming wrapped on this film prior to the end of shooting on Harry Potter, and shortly before the latter film wrapped, she was able to return to film her scenes, along with cast mates, Ralph Fiennes, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith, and her own sister, Sophie Thompson.
A real elephant had been cast for the film but unfortunately contracted a virus and died.
Ralph Fiennes's cameo was shot in two days, as was Ewan McGregor's.
Nanny McPhee's sidekick Mr Edelweiss was originally set to be a raven. However, these are large and rather dangerous birds so director Susanna White persuaded Emma Thompson to change it to a jackdaw, a much more manageable creature. Thompson trained extensively with six jackdaws so she would appear used to them onscreen.
Emma Thompson was writing the script, as early as March 2007.
The field of barley was grown for real in Buckinghamshire. Rhys Ifans had managed to hurt his ankle, delaying filming for two weeks. By the time they were ready to shoot, the barley had turned a beautiful bright yellow. If they had stuck to their original schedule - minus Ifans's accident - the field would have been green.
Susanna White wanted to make the film as she loved the depiction of Mrs Green as a modern independent woman despite the movie being set during World War 2.
The levels of happiness on the "Scratch-O-Matic", as seen on the "Happy-O-Meter", are: Amused, Tickled Pink, Cloud Nine, Ecstatic and Delirious.
Although the film looks to be set in an idyllic English summer, the production was frequently plagued by rain.
Maggie Smith, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes and Rhys Ifans have all starred in Harry Potter movies.
A pig shaped barrage balloon can be seen flying above Battersea Power Station as Nanny McPhee and the boys ride into London. Rock group Pink Floyd famously used an image of a balloon in the shape of a pig flying over Battersea Power Station on the cover of their 1977 album 'Animals'.
The mud on the Green's farm was made of a toothpaste-like material.
The motorcycle to which the sidecar is attached is an 350cc Ariel W/NG used by British Commonwealth forces during WW2.
Both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rhys Ifans have started in comic book movies: Gyllenhaal as Rachel in DC comics "The Dark Knight" and Rhys as Lizard / Dr. Conners in Marvel's "The Amazing Spiderman".
Sinead Matthews and Katy Brand play Miss Topsey and Miss Turvey. Sam Kelly (Mr Docherty) was in the 1999 film Topsy-Turvy.
Mrs. Docherty is addressed by her husband as "Aggy", that is Agatha Brown, the Baby from the first Nanny McPhee (2005) film. Apart from Nanny McPhee, she is the only character from the first film who appears.
