The Wineville Chicken Coop Murders were a real series of child abductions and murders that took place in California in the mid-1920, ending in 1928 when Gordon Stewart Northcott was arrested and convicted of the murders of over twenty children. The case was also the basis of the 2008 Clint Eastwood film, Vahetus (2008).

John Wayne Gacy, aka "the Killer Clown", is portrayed by John Carroll Lynch. Lynch had previously appeared in American Horror Story: Freak Show as Twisty the Clown, another killer clown that is said to have been inspired by Gacy.

Aileen (Lily Rabe) and Ricky (Anthony Ruivivar) dance to "Sweet Jane" in an homage to a similar dance to the same song in the film Sündinud tapjaks (1994).

The character of Aileen Wuornos (Lily Rabe) is introduced with the song "Carnival" by Natalie Merchant. In real life, Wuornos loved the song and requested it for her funeral after her execution in 2002; the song was also used in the end credits of the 2003 Wuornos documentary Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003).

Johnny Depp actually does own at least one painting done by John Wayne Gacy.

When John (Wes Bentley) looks into the guest book, the last entry states "I am the zodiac" with the symbol from the famous zodiac murders.

John Carroll Lynch plays John Wayne Gacy. One of the other guests at the party is the Zodiac Killer. Lynch played Arthur Leigh Allen, who is suspected of being the killer in the movie Sodiaak (2007).

The song Richard Ramirez (Anthony Ruivivar) plays during the dinner is from the movie and a nod to Sündinud tapjaks (1994) and Micky and Mallory, prolific serial killers in their own movie.

In this season, John Carroll Lynch plays John Wayne Gacy, known as the "Killer Clown" due to his charitable services at fund-raising events, parades and children's parties where he would dress as "Pogo the Clown". In the previous season ("Freak Show"), Lynch played Twisty the Clown.

Richard "Ricky" Ramirez and Aileen Wuornos both share the same birthday, February 29.

When Aileen Woronos (Lily Rabe) arrives at the hotel bar, the song "Carnival" by Natalie Merchant can be heard in the background. This was the same song that Aileen requested be played at her memorial after her death.

The Wineville Chicken Coop Murders was also the basis of the 2008 Clint Eastwood film, Vahetus (2008) in which Denis O'Hare also stars.

Last season (American Horror Story: Freakshow) John Carroll Lynch played Twisty The Clown who was inspired by real life serial killer John Wayne Gacy. In this episode Lynch this time plays John Wayne Gacy.

This is the first episode of the season with Lily Rabe. She plays Aileen Wuornos in this season.

During the 4th episode of season 5, James Patrick March (Evan Peters) holds the annual Devil's Night Soriee, the guest list including notorious American serial killers such as Alieen Wuornos (Lily Rabe), John Wayne Gacy (John Carroll Lynch), Richard Ramirez (Anthony Ruivivar), Jeffery Dahmer (Seth Gabel) and the Zodiac Killer. Interestingly enough, the actor John Carroll Lynch who plays Gacy in this episode, was in David Fincher's 2007 film Sodiaak (2007), based on the Zodiac killings in Northern California in the late 1960's and 70's. Lynch played Arthur Leigh Allen, who was considered to be the most prominent suspect for the Zodiac Killer in the actual case of the murders.

When John looks into the guest book you can see "I am the Zodiac" scrawled on the page. John Carroll Lynch played Arthur Leigh Allen in "Sodiaak (2007), Leigh Allen is considered by many to be the Zodiac Killer.
