Thirty-three year-old Mei-Ling Zhang, a Chinese refugee claimant, dies while in custody. She was on a hunger strike protesting the delay in her immigration hearing, which was six-months and counting, and the fact that she was basically being held in prison. She was only one of thirty-six such Chinese refugee claimants across the province on a hunger strike. Through Gina Otaviani, Da Vinci learns that Mei-Ling was force fed against her wishes which may have led to her death through fluid in the lungs. Da Vinci considers pursuing homicide charges against the prison warden and her staff, especially after he learns of an eyewitness - another refugee in custody - to support the story. However he has to convince the Crown or the police to back him up. Meanwhile, Leary and Shannon continue with their investigation of the shooting deaths of Curtis and Lisa.
