Timothy West's father, Lockwood West, played King Edward VII in Upstairs, Downstairs: Guest of Honour (1972) and reprised his role in The Life and Times of David Lloyd George: All Flesh Is Grass (1981).
Samuel West (Prince Albert Victor Edward) is the real-life son of Timothy West (King Edward VII).
Samuel West played Prince Albert Victor Edward as an adult in The Ripper (1997).
Helen Ryan (Princess Alexandra) reprised her role in The Elephant Man (1980) and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994).
Annette Crosbie (Queen Victoria) appeared in ten of the series' thirteen episodes, more than anyone else. In second place are Timothy West (Albert, Prince of Wales/King Edward VII) and Guy Slater (Lord Carrington), who appeared in nine episodes each.
The series takes place from May 24, 1841 to May 20, 1910.
Sir John Gielgud played Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in The Prime Minister (1941).
Francesca Annis reprised her role as Lillie Langtry in Lillie (1978).
On the DVD commentary, Director John Gorrie explained how it took a great deal of persuasion to convince Annette Crosbie to accept the role of Queen Victoria. Crosbie was reluctant because she felt she had done quite enough television during that time, and also, she was starring in a play about the Bronte sisters, which was supposedly going to come in to London. That play never did come into London, and Crosbie was glad she had changed her mind and accepted the role, which turned out to be a great success and "such fun to do".
Charles Sturridge directed Robert Hardy in Gulliver's Travels (1996), Shackleton (2002), and Lassie (2005).
Annette Crosbie is only eight months older than Timothy West, yet she played his mother. Also, Felicity Kendal played West's elder sister, but is twelve years younger than him in real-life.
Felicity Kendal (Princess Vicky) played the mother of Christopher Neame (Kaiser Wilhelm II) in spite of the fact that she is less than a year older than him in real-life.
With the exception of Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin, Neville Chamberlain, and Clement Attlee, every British Prime Minister from 1834 to 1955 is depicted as a character in the series.
