The title "Mi No Take Kurabe" ("Measuring Social Standing") was taken from Higuchi Ichiyo's novel "Takekurabe".

The title "Shimi To Doku Dashi" ("The Stain and Poison Removal") was taken from Shusaku Endo's novel "Umi To Dokuyaku" ("The Sea and Poison").

A title card appears that says "Studio Kumera". This is a parody of Studio Ghibli's logo, with "Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei" creator Koji Kumeta's name added.

At the open air bath, there is a sign that says the spring has the ability to cure many favourable RPG (role-playing game) status ailments in games like Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star among others. The effects are HP Recovery, Remove Poison, Cure Petrify and Cure Other Abnormal Status Effect. In role-playing games a common way to heal party members is to drink or take a dip in a spring/hot spring when one is far away from a town or an inn.

Nozomu points at Usui with the accusatory finger motions of Katsuragi Yako, the famous schoolgirl detective and main character of "Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro."

The first eyepatch is a parody of the Columbia Pictures logo.

When Nozomu is mentioning situations that are wrong, one of them is "Holding the Olympics in the country where 90% of the executions occur." This is a reference to the 2008 Olympics being held in China, at which Japan had lost out.

When Abiru takes off her eyepatch, she shows a different colored eye (medically called Heterochromia). This is likely a reference to the heroine Asuna Kagurazaka from Mahô sensei Negima! (2005), who also had Heterochromia.

A blackboard depicts the name Lee Nakanao who is "The Secret Society Dark Patriot Brigade Seventh Generation Brigade Chief". This is a reference to Меланхолия Харухи Судзумии (2006), in which Suzumiya-san was Brigade Chief for the also insanely long club name "The Save the World By Overloading it With Fun Suzumiya Haruhi Brigade" or the SOS Brigade for short.

The milk bottle says "moh." In Japan when cows say moo it is pronounced as "moh."

The character Dr BJ is a homage and parody of the Osamu Tezuka character Black Jack.
