Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, was born.. back when Ulysses S Grant was President. It was post-Civil War, and America was picking up the pieces after abject carnage from the war between the states - the costliest human toll in U.S. history. Americans wanted to escape. And, they did - for generation after generation. The circus survived the distraction of another great war, early into the 20-th century. It survived the advent of moving pictures and the Great Depression, when 25-cents, was the hourly wage. Ringling Brothers survived another world at war - and then another competitor: television. However - Starting in the 1990's, this storied and still relevant entertainment extravaganza was issued a death sentence by the radicals on the progressive, liberal left. Animal activists began what would become a decades-long assault on Ringling Brothers. Their mantra: animal cruelty. Their goal - shut-down the animal performances at the circus.
