The game is a first person full motion video interactive adventure drama about the nightlife in the early 90s that features several tongue in cheek scenarios as well as a few serious ones. The game was the result of the first of two collaborations between writer and director Jeff Green and the Animatics Multimedia Corporation, the other one being the similarly styled interactive FMV game called Mode. Both games were published by Corel Corporation, a popular Canadian software company that tried at the time to expand their business into the increasingly booming gaming market. There are eight extended scenarios in the game as well as a couple of short ones. The game features adult themes, moral choices, cursing, explicit conversations about sex and violence, some female nudity, a couple of sex scenes, some violence and a particularly disturbing rape scene, but it also features some supernatural elements. Success of this game among the critics lead to Animatics's collaboration with the Corel Corporation. The result was a slightly less obscure adventure game called Mode, which mostly used the same gameplay style as Midnight Stranger.
Midnight Stranger was never had a distributor, so the game was sent to buyers by mail. It was never reissued again, so copies of it are extremely rare today.
