Shinobi no Kuni is a Japanese jidaigeki film featuring a ninja. This movie is not only serious but also comical story. These two are in a fine balance. The action is unmissable. I have never seen such a nonstop ninja fighting. In addition, I was impressed by the deep love of Mumon and his wife. You will weep over Mumon's screaming at the end of the movie. In the Warring States period of Shinobi no Kuni, the people had no sense of love. So, the words loving are not used in this movie. But it made my heart ache. The same line of people from different walks of life change the meaning by the person. And I want to watch the movie many times for hidden messages in a movie.

In Iga, called the "land of stealth," ninjas spend all their time fighting and killing, with no more regard for humanity than animals have. The imperious warlord Oda Nobunaga has been invading and taking over province after province, but even he is wary of attacking Iga. The greatest ninja in Iga is Mumon, whose name means no-gate because no gate can be held against him; but Mumon (Satoshi Ohno) himself is quite a light-hearted guy whose main question about doing anything is "who will pay me?" When he is paid enough to kill the younger son of the Iga ruler, the older son swears vengeance and sets in train a series of events to bring Iga and Oda to the battlefield…. Evidently Satoshi Ohno, beyond being an actor/ninja warrior, is a dj and the leader of a J-pop band, and his breezy style for much of this film provides a great sense of ease, even comedy, but the underlying message of the film is far more harsh and, well, sad. An interesting mix of style versus substance, and definitely a different take on the Japanese historical film. The ending just might break your heart, though.

Ohno Satoshi is the leader of the extremely popular idol group called Arashi. His singing, dancing and acting skills have been highly regarded. Almost all of the action scenes in this movie were done by himself (not stuntman), and he choreographed one action scene by combining dance moves with actions. Besides actions, this movie is not like any ninja movie you would have seen before. The director portrayed another face of ninjas that no one has seen before. There is a well balance of excitement, humour, love and tears in this movie which makes it very enjoyable.

If you like Ninja movie, then consider watching this one. It was not an ordinary Ninja we used to watch. With its historical background, Mumon showed us the side of Ninja colony that we might not know yet. It has fair amount of comical action, also hilarious facial expressions that even though you don't understand what they say, you'd laugh. The cast can't be better, their fluid move for fighting scene is superb. You'll understand their feeling without understanding what they're saying. Watch it till the end, you'll find Mumon not just giving you good laugh, but a deep thought in the end; 'are we human enough?' Give this movie a try if it showed in your country, since it was not made world wide, only to several Japanese movie event.

Mumon is a great movie. I think everyone should watch this movie. It contains a great message. Watching this movie can give you a clear view of ninja life.their dark life and how they survive, their status in community of Japan in 1500s~

All casts played their roles very well. Talk about the lead character: Ohno Satoshi who played Mumon, his role was spectacular...i was mesmerized with his acting...from the start until the end. His playful side, emotion, fighting skills made me go speechless.

Ishihara Satomi, Iseya, Suzuki Ryuhei, Chinen Yuri had a very strong character too...marvelous.

Thanks to Ryo Wada for a great ninja story...and Yoshihiko Nakamura for a excellent movie.

Watching one time is not enough.

Based on Japan actual historic event, this movie adaptation from Ryo Wada popular novel of the same name, is totally worth watching for. This sword slashing, dagger clashes action movie is so well balanced with humour that it lighten the story plot. However, the hidden messages magnify itself throughout the frames.

Be it the main character or supporting one, every character in the movie spice up the drama. You can feel the emotions for each lost, win, fight and be prepare to blown away by the sleek, well trained and intense hand movements of characters. No red, gore bloodshed too.

This is definitely different from any ninja movies out there, exposing the fact of these brute ninjas. A great work from Director Yoshihiro Nakamura, cast lists and staff roundup.

MUMON - The Land of Stealth. Awesome movie to be watched.

I really doubt this movie worth watching, well maybe for once it's ok. But most of its characters are flat. They writers tried to add twists to story but most of the time they fail and Mumon, the movies hero, is mostly a superficial character. I watched it because of it's 8 rating but it's definitely a 5-6 rating movie

I must say, I was a little apprehensive going into this one, what with such ridiculously high ratings on IMDB. And that scepticism proved justified in a film that is perhaps more a vehicle for idol Satoshi Ohno. Having never lived in Japan, but spent some time there, I can confirm that it will not take too long channel-surfing to find this boy's face on the idiot's lantern.

If I had to summarise "Mumon" in one word, it would be "silly." But the plot is rather complex, sort of. The land of Iga is surrounded by lands controlled by Nobunaga clan. As such, the twelve elder statesmen of Iga decide to put their in-fighting to one side in order to fight off the advances of invading forces. Though numerous deceptions along the way cause the Nobunaga clan to proceed with caution.

Offering the land to them, the ninjas of Iga build a castle for Nobunaga in order to earn good wages from the outsiders for the work. But once finished, they soon destroy the castle, prompting Nobunaga to take the land by force. But with no offer of payment for defending the land, the ninjas of Iga choose to flee, leaving Iga there for the taking.

But, persuaded by his strict wife, Mumon (Ohno), Iga's strongest ninja, shows that the people of Iga are not simply money-grabbing mercenaries, but slightly decent people. This leads to a series of dramatic, highly choreographed, cheaply-CGIed and down-right silly fight scenes with inevitable conclusions.

There are some things that "Mumon: The Land of Stealth" does well, but there are also many bad points. To start, the silliness is comical, but not always in the intended way. As such, it becomes a film that it is a little too difficult to take seriously. This sees some poor CGI in place for over-the-top moves and give the impression of a film that is just badly made, which in parts can be true. The ridiculous close-ups of Ohno while in battle are comic, but clearly idol work at its most blatant.

The serious messages that conclude of endless double-crossings, showing a peoples fuelled only by greed and selfish ends that will happily see their own children die, as such lose some of their impact when placed alongside the silliness. The strength of "Mumon" is in its depiction of a differing view of the ninja: a clan of soulless creatures that will only lift a finger if money is involved, lazy, conniving and deceitful - logical for those made famous for sneaking-up behind others and attacking them.

The fight scenes switch from the entertaining to the sketchy to the ludicrous, leaving the audience a little unsure as to which frame of mind to be in throughout. Somewhat disappointing from Yoshihiro Nakamura, director of "Fish Story".

When it works, "Mumon" is okay; when it's bad, it just looks a bit cheap and silly, and like the ninja themselves, perhaps not deserving of such a favourable reputation.

We are all familiar now with the nature of Japanese jidaigeki (period drama) epics set in the age of the samurai. By going back to what appears to be relatively simpler times when everyone knew their place in the social order, films like Yoji Yamamoto's Twilight Samurai (2003) and The Hidden Blade (2004) try to remind us that what is really important in life is respect for order, attention to duty, and acting with honour and loyalty. Director Yoshiho Nakamura, known for somewhat off-beat dramas, presents a more modern and comic outlook on the jidaigeki epic in Mumon: The Land of Stealth, where there is only one thing that is important to the citizens of Iga; it's all about the money.

Skirmishes are an everyday occurrence in Iga, the Land of Stealth, home of the ninja. Which makes you think that they would know by now that Mumon (named after the fact that 'No gate' is closed to him), the greatest ninja in the land, is pretty much invincible, so there's not really much point in taking him on. If they did that however, life would be fairly dull (and there wouldn't be much of a film), but life is cheap in 1579, and the ninja love nothing more than a good fight. As long as they are being paid for it.

The opportunity of a handsome pay-packet comes their way with the news that the warlord Nobunaga Oda has been conquering neighbouring provinces. Ise has just fallen and, vastly outnumbered, Iga is sure to follow. Rather than being concerned, Iga's Council of Twelve see it as an opportunity to make some money and decide to invite Nobunaga Oda into Iga, where - for a modest salary - they will even build a castle for him in the heartland of the country. Oda however has warned his son, who has taken up command of Ise - on no account to make war with Iga as it is nothing but a "swamp of rabid beasts", but headstrong junior thinks he knows better and ignores his father's advice...

Filled with comedy and irreverence, if Yoshihiro Nakamura's Mumon is not what you traditionally expect from a samurai film, it at least delivers where it matters most; in the spectacular fight scenes that inevitably ensue. Battle sequences and individual duels are thrillingly choreographed and intensely staged, with hordes of flying ninja warriors leaping around, appearing out of rocks, trees and from underground, without over-reliance on CGI. Just as importantly however, director Nakamura doesn't indulge in sepia-tinted nostalgia but rather - amidst all the comedy - has something relevant to say about the 'ninja warriors' of today, where it is indeed all about the money.

If you can get past the first half an hour (as a non native language speaker) you get a good old school romp.

It is difficult to be completely fair about a Japanese ninja film I saw with some of the most surreal subtitles possible, "We will attack Iraq soon", "this is money....Yongle hundred money". To add to the confusion whoever was translating names made a splendid job with often quite literal translations, Big Meal, Ah and No Door amongst others, names that blended almost unobtrusively with the generally confusing goings on.

It was however enough to follow a film that I suspect was filmed in 2017 using 1950's script and technology, what was produced can be described as full ninja anime. To make up for the somewhat obscure start the film transitioned into what was an excellent portrayal of an archetypal ninja culture, warmongering, money hungry and fun hungry, martial art living badasses.

There were some sublime parts of this film that made it worth the watch.

A 7 for trying damn hard :D
