Justin Timberlake was reluctant to say "Word", as he felt it was something he would never say. As a joke, the editing team reused the one take where he said "Word" after nearly every line.

Bart, posing as an Italian marathon runner, says "I used up all my English!" which is what Italian filmmaker Roberto Benigni said after winning the Academy Award.

The Backstreet Boys were first offered to guest star, but they immediately declined saying that "they would not embarrass themselves or their fans" by appearing on the show. *NSYNC instantly said yes to being asked to guest star, although Justin Timberlake had to record his lines separately from the rest of the band due to a family death.

When Lisa reverses the music video to reveal the subliminal message, it only affects the audio.

This episode aired seven months before 9/11. During the scene in New York, the World Trade Center is briefly visible and there was a scene of a New York tower (the MAD Magazine main office) getting blown up.

The title is based on the American boy band New Kids on the Block.

Blackboard: I WILL NOT BUY A PRESIDENTIAL PARDON

Couch: The couch and TV are set up by a prison wall. A searchlight pans left and right across the scene. The family burrows under the ground towards the couch, leaving "tunnel mounds" in their wake. They pop out of the ground, wearing striped prison uniforms, and jump onto the couch. Shortly afterwards, the searchlight finds and locks onto the family.

This episode hints that Springfield is located on the east coast of United States, when L.T. Smash. Smash is able to sail the aircraft carrier to New York City.

While reporting on the marathon, the "6" on Kent Brockman's microphone appears to be the logo of the 6 line of the New York City Subway.
