This game show introduced a bachelor or bachelorette to three prospective dates, each of whom gave a self-introduction. The audience would select the partner they thought was the most compatible. If the guest agreed with the audience's selection, the show would pay for the couple's first date. Afterwards, the couple would return to the show to tell everyone whether it had been a dream date or a nightmare.

The show premiered on September 19, 1983. Coincidentally, that is the exact same day that the syndicated edition of Wheel of Fortune (1983) debut. Before hosting this show, Chuck Woolery used to host the NBC Daytime edition of Wheel of Fortune (1975) until 1981.
Chuck Woolery created his trademark phrase "We'll be back in two and two" on this show (and simultaneously on Scrabble (1984), the daytime game show he hosted on NBC during the same period). The line referred to the fact that the program would return in two minutes and two seconds, the total length of a standard commercial break at the time, including the fade-out and fade-ins bookending each break.
The show was created by Eric Lieber, who also served as the show's executive producer, and was produced by Eric Lieber Productions in association with and distributed by Telepictures (1983-1986), Lorimar-Telepictures (1986-1989), Lorimar Television (1989-1990), and Warner Bros. Television (1989-1994).
The show had many announcers during it's run in the 80's. The original announcer was Rod Roddy who announced until the end of Season 2 in 1985. After him legendary announcer Gene Wood took over and also lasted two seasons from 1985-1987. Wood's protégé Rich Jeffries took over and then Johnny Gilbert, both of whom only lasted 1 season each. After that, Eric Lieber asked Groundlings performer John Cervenka to take over in 1989 and he stayed for the rest of the show's run.
The theme song was updated in 1990 to have more Jazzy main theme and more orchestrated synth contestant intro cue.
The set remained the same throughout the entire run of the show. They just adjusted the lighting to the set in 1990 to make it look less white and more colorful.
Love Connection was so successful that it led to Chuck Woolery getting his own talk show The Chuck Woolery Show (1991) which was also produced by Eric Lieber. However, only 13 weeks of shows were made before it was ultimately canceled.
Some contestants returned on the show after an unsuccessful date.
In a Daily Variety trade ad promoting the end of the show's run in 1994 after 11 seasons, it was stated that there were 35,478 taped interviews, 2,145 episodes, 31 marriages, and 20 babies.
This show had a very long run in syndication lasting 11 years. For many years it was third behind Merv Griffin's Wheel of Fortune (1983) and Jeopardy! (1984) for longest lasting game show in syndication, but since has been surpassed by Family Feud (1999) (with Steve Harvey's first season being the record breaker) and the syndicated edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (2002).
Although the show was canceled, reruns still aired in the 1994-1995 television season. The show was then rerun on the USA Network from October 16, 1995 to June 6, 1997. The show was finally rerun on Game Show Network from January 6, 2003 to July 18, 2008. Beginning November 9, 2009, the show returned to GSN's weekday lineup but have since been removed.
