While being taped in his car, by the police, committing blackmail, celebrity gossip columnist T.K. Richmond, is killed by a bomb planted in the headrest, and triggered by pushing in his cigarette lighter. Detectives assume, at first, that the murderer must be one of Richmond's blackmail victims, since Richmond has a habit of blackmailing celebrities to keep their stories out of the paper. When they realize the bomb's signature resembles not only the plot of a movie, still in production, but an actual unsolved bombing, Logan and Wheeler turn their attention to the film's screenwriter and production company. Detectives must peel through the layers of lies, motives, suspects, and misleads, to get to the truth.

This is the first episode to crossover outside of Dick Wolf's programs since "Homicide". It features Mary McCormack as her В простом виде (2008) character US Marshal Mary Shannon. That show aired its pilot two weeks prior to this one.
Halfway through the episode Logan refers to "the Sweet Smell of Success" and Burt Lancaster's role as a predatory gossip columnist. The victim T. K. Richmond is based (down to the younger sister, the typewriter, and the ugly eyeglasses) on Lancaster's character J. J. Hunsecker in the film Sweet Smell of Success (1957). It is not quite clear from the script whether Richmond is supposed to be trying to imitate Hunsecker or whether the writer, director, and costume/set folks are just having fun.
The joke about Mary Shannon needing to be back in Albuquerque by Sunday night at 10 is an in-joke referencing the eastern standard time that new episodes of В простом виде (2008) air on USA Network.
The doctor in Louisiana is named Dr. Benway, an inside joke. Dr. Benway is a character from the novels of William S. Burroughs, in particular 'Naked Lunch'.

While Logan and Wheeler are interviewing the screenwriter (played by Maury Ginsberg), a poster of "Carolina Heat" can be seen in the background. This fictitious movie featured prominently in "Courtship" from the previous season of the season.
