The game will introduce a loot-dropping system, known as the "Gear System", which provides character-specific costume pieces and equipment; players will be able to customize the look of their characters and upgrade their abilities, such as increasing their speed, strength, or health.
Ed Boon has confirmed that there will be more DLC characters from the last game Mortal Kombat X (2015).
In one of their pre-fight introductions, Captain Cold states his heart is frozen. Flash responds with "Let it go." He also says this to Mr. Freeze.
Dee Bradley Baker was replaced by Jeffrey Combs as the voice of Brainiac in Injustice 2.
In one of their pre-fight introductions, Harley asks Mr. Freeze if he'll make her a pony, and Freeze says he'll make the "twilight sparkle". Harley's voice actress is veteran voice actress Tara Strong, who also voices the character Twilight Sparkle in My Little Pony: Freundschaft ist Magie (2010).
As of 1st September 2016, the confirmed playable characters are: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Atrocitus, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Grodd, Aquaman, and Blue Beetle. Flash was in the reveal trailer, but has not been in a trailer since.
Starfire, Red Hood and Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat are confirmed as the first three DLC characters.
On May 29th 2017, a multiverse event called "The War To End All Wars" began, which lasted for a full week, until June 5th. The event was done to promote the release of Wonder Woman (2017) on June 2nd, and completing the event granted players the gear items required to recreate the costume worn by Gal Gadot in the film. After the event ended, the gear pieces became available in Mother Box gear drops.
During a cutaway scene, Superman uses his heat vision to destroy a bridge. The girders on the bridge make an arch that looks like the outline of the Hall of Justice from the '70s Super Friends cartoon.
In the Ace O'Clubs arena the civilians ignore the fighting. This is a call back to the comics in that when metahumans fought there, the patrons would purposely ignore the fight assuming the superhero would win.
Blue Beetle is a confirmed character. He was announced to be in the game at San Diego Comic-Con 2016.
Black Canary was confirmed on a February 2nd, 2017 trailer.
The game was rumored to be released on March 2017.
Darkseid is confirmed as a pre-order bonus for Injustice 2.
With the addition of Sub-Zero, he makes several references to the story of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (2008).

Mortal Kombat has been referenced twice on multiverse events: There was an event called "Doctor Fate-ality" and another one called "Fates Worse Than Death".
This is the fourth time that the Ninja Turtles appeared together with Batman. They appeared together in three limited run comic book series crossovers occurred as a result of a several joint projects between the Ninja Turtles' current comic book publisher IDW Publishing and DC Comics, two crossovers sold by DC and the other one sold by IDW.
This game contains two examples of voice actors reprising their roles from animated tv shows. Phil LaMarr returns to voice the John Stewart carnation of the Green Lantern like he did in the Justice League (2001-2004) and Justice League: Unlimited (2004-2006) animated series, whereas Khary Payton reprises his role of Cyborg from the Teen Titans (2003-2006).

There is also a rumored "Fighter Pack 4" but this has yet to be confirmed.
