The production was filmed over a three day period from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory on the train 'The Ghan'.

The film utilized fifteen different camera angles during principal photography.

The DVD sleeve notes state that this "immersive journey" is "an Australian first foray into the 'slow TV movement". Moveover, publicity for this picture declares that it is "Australia's first foray into Slow TV, a genre that became popular in Scandinavia in 2009 when a Norwegian broadcaster mounted one camera onto the front of a train."

SBS Australia Director of TV and Online Content, Marshall Heald, said of this film: "It's exciting to introduce this innovative new type of programming to Australian audiences on TV, SBS On Demand and via Facebook." Heald added: "Slow TV offers an alternative to the noise, drama and disruption of other shows, and gives viewers a unique opportunity to pause, uninterrupted for three hours in prime time, as they experience first-hand a little-known story important to our multicultural national story."

The Australian DVD release included as special DDV extra bonus features helicopter shots, historical graphic sequences, and the complete journey in a whole trip time-lapse short.

Another film / alternate version, which is very long, is entitled 'The Ghan: The Full Journey' (2018), and is marketed as a 'Collector's Edition' on DVD, and its running time is a massive 16 hours, 26 minutes and 52 seconds.

This documentary film has no music nor narration but is not mute or without sound. There are title cards and one can hear train drivers speak as well as the audio of the outback and the locomotive travelling through the Australian landscape.
