Despite good ratings, the show only lasted two years.
Brad Pitt was "abducted" by the Jackass crew on the series finale.
Prior to Jackass airing on MTV, the crew was given an opportunity from Saturday Night Live to perform their stunts on a weekly basis. They declined, but Knoxville would host the show in 2005.
A lot of Steve-O's stunts were censored by MTV due them being too extreme. But they were eventually added on to DVD under the name "Don't Try This at Home: The Steve-O Video."
As soon as the show took off, Johnny Knoxville sprained his ankle after attempting a stunt to jump over the LA river while on roller skates. He had to wear an ankle brace and use crutches for the entire first season of the show.
Ehren McGhehey had a lot of stunts but they were turned down by the crew because they were deemed "stupid and unfunny".
Preston Lacy, Ehren McGhehey and Dave England are the only members of Jackass that weren't seen in Big Brother magazine or CKY videos. However, Dave England was in a snowboarding magazine that worked in conjunction with Big Brother.
Before Jackass, there was a skateboarding magazine called Big Brother. Jackass director, Jeff Tremaine was a former editor and most of the guys who would soon be in Jackass were featured in the magazine such as Bam Margera (who was also making CKY videos), Chris Pontius, Steve-O, and Wee Man. One day, Johnny Knoxville came to Big Brother to do an article on self-defense equipment which Tremaine agreed to publish and also told Johnny to film it for Big Brother's video line. After the video went out, television producers saw the video and gave Knoxville his own show. Jeff Tremaine helped get the show with the help of his close friend Spike Jonze who is a film and television producer. After many visits from different channels and a bid war with Comedy Central, MTV picked upped the series.
Most of the episodes from the first season are clips taken from Big Brother magazine's video line and Bam Margera's CKY videos.
The show was originally going to be called assholes, but MTV strongly advised not to do that. Hense, the naming of the show "Jackass"
The Rocket Skates skit from "Jackass The Movie" was originally going to be in the Jackass show. However, due to MTV rejecting it, the skit was put in the movie.
