A devastating fire decimates the side of the river where Korg's family lives, so the clan is forced to try to cross the great river, across which they can see game to hunt and plants to gather. But how to cross? They do not know about swimming and the river is too wide to wade across. Korg tries to cross, but unlike a pond or a stream, the river suddenly becomes very deep and Korg almost drowns, barely getting back to shore with the help of his family holding spears out for him to grab onto so they could haul him back to shore.
