Four sisters come of age in America in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Emma Watson took over the role of Meg March from Emma Stone, who became unavailable due to scheduling conflicts with promoting Фаворитка (2018). Ironically, Stone previously took over the role of Mia in Ла-Ла Ленд (2016) after Watson dropped out of the project due to the commitment of her role as Belle in the Disney live-action remake of Красавица и чудовище (2017).

Greta Gerwig was originally tasked by Sony Pictures to write a new screen adaptation of Louise May Alcott's novel after the studio had rejected earlier scripts by Olivia Milch and Sarah Polley. However, after the success of Gerwig's Леди Бёрд (2017), Sony Pictures hastily offered Gerwig the chance to direct this film using her script in the hopes of forcing the delayed project into production after years of development hell.

Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, and Greta Gerwig all previously collaborated on Gerwig's solo feature film directorial debut, Леди Бёрд (2017).

With her role as Jo March, this is the second time that Saoirse Ronan will portray one of Katharine Hepburn's iconic roles after Mary, Queen of Scots (in which she portrayed the titular character in Две королевы (2018)). She also shared a common bond with Winona Ryder, who played Jo in the 1994 version of Маленькие женщины (1994). Ronan played Abigail Williams in the 2016 Broadway revival of "The Crucible", the same role that Ryder played in the 1996 film.

The film's cast includes two Oscar winners: Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper; and three Oscar nominees: Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, and Laura Dern.

Meryl Streep appeared alongside character actress Mary Wickes in Postcards from the Edge (1990) who four years later would play Aunt March in Маленькие женщины (1994).

Screenwriter Sarah Polley worked on the script prior to Greta Gerwig taking over scripting duties.

Timothée Chalamet's role was played in the 1994 film by Christian Bale. Chalamet and Bale appeared together in the film Недруги (2017). Their careers have other parallels as well. Chalamet states that he was inspired to become an actor after seeing Тёмный рыцарь (2008); although he also stated that it was Heath Ledger' performance in particular that inspired him. Chalamet later went on to work with director Christopher Nolan as well, appearing in Интерстеллар (2014). His character was played as an adult by Casey Affleck, while Bale was succeeded as Batman by Ben Affleck.

Meryl Streep co-starred with Angela Lansbury in Мэри Поппинс возвращается (2018). Lansbury played Aunt March in the BBC TV series Маленькие женщины (2017), the same role that Streep will play in the 2019 adaptation. In addition, both Streep and Lansbury also played the villainous role of the candidate's dominating mother in Richard Condon's adaptations of Маньчжурский кандидат (1962) and Маньчжурский кандидат (2004), respectively.

Meryl Streep and Bob Odenkirk previously worked together in Steven Spielberg's Секретное досье (2017).

Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Greta Gerwig, and Timothée Chalamet have worked with Wes Anderson on their respective films; Ronan starred in Отель Гранд Будапешт (2014), Streep and Gerwig lend their voice work in their respective stop-motion animated films: Бесподобный мистер Фокс (2009) and Остров собак (2018), while Chalamet and Ronan are set to appear in the upcoming The French Dispatch (2020).
