American filmmaker and avid hockey fan Kevin Smith claims that the series inspired him to departure from the comedy films that have made Smith famous. His dream project is a two-part film about hockey in Canada.
Each episode had its own research team. Michael McKinley, the author of the companion book to the series, was involved in several episodes.
Sweaters, hockey sticks and skates were authentically replicated for the series.
Many of the cast members in the dramatized scenes were more like hockey players than real actors.
The vintage ice hockey rink used in the series was recreated to the venerable old arena in west Toronto and turned into a fully functioning production set. With the help of the computer-generated imagery the set was transformed into a different historical locations, spanning several decades of hockey history.
